This document discusses honor killings in India. It defines honor killings as deaths, mainly of women, for marrying within the same clan or outside their caste. Historically, they date back to pre-Islamic times but increased after the 1947 partition of India. Today, most honor killings occur in northern India, with over 1,000 people murdered annually, though few cases receive publicity. The rigid Indian caste system and decisions of village councils perpetuate honor killings by prohibiting inter-caste marriage. While the government is taking legal action, changes are still needed to social attitudes towards marriage and emancipate people from traditions justifying honor killings.
