Grace and Compassio

n of God
WHAT IS GRACE?
• Grace is unmerited, unconditional, undeserved that
are given to the miserable sinners freely.
• Grace are Common Grace and Special Grace.
• Grace is from God Himself, as the Sovereign Ruler, C
reator and Sustainer of the Universe.
COMMON GRACE
• This is grace from God that is common, freely given
for all the people. The increasing knowledge, techn
ology, preservation of truth and morality, properties
, bountiful harvest, everyday basic neccesities and e
ven when you wake up in the morning, that's actual
ly common grace.
The LORD upholds all who are falling and raises up all
who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to you, an
d you give them their food in due season. You open yo
ur hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing. T
he LORD is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his
works. The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all
who call on him in truth.
- Psalms 145:14-18 ESV
Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he d
id good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful s
easons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladnes
s.” - Acts 14:17

so that you may be sons of your Father who is in hea

ven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the
good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. -
Matthew 5:45
According to Genesis 5:3-5, "When Adam had lived 1
30 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after
his image, and named him Seth. The days of Adam a
fter he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had oth
er sons and daughters. Thus all the days that Adam liv
ed were 930 years, and he died."
SPECIAL GRACE
Grace that is special, freely given to someone whom
God wanted to be saved, for all the elect. Sinners des
erve the God's justice, sinners deserved to be punish
ed in hell, sinners are the receipients of God's wrath.
But because God has special grace, He gave it freely. I
nstead of letting the sinners suffer from God's wrath,
God executed the terrible justice to Jesus Christ. Go
d's wrath was satisfied on cross. And because of His s
pecial grace, we are saved. Special grace came by Chr
ist alone.
According to John 1: 16-17, "And from his fullness we
have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was
given through Moses;
grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many di
ed through one man's trespass, much more have the
grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that on
e man Jesus Christ abounded for many. - Romans 5:1
5
God's grace is the source of justification, election, call
ing, faith, forgiveness, perseverance, preservation, co
mfort, hope and salvation.
COMPASSION
According to Louis Berkhof in his book Systematic Th
eology, "If the grace of God contemplates man as guil
ty before God, and therefore in need of forgiveness, t
he mercy of God contemplates him as one who is bea
ring the consequences of sin, who is in a pitiable con
dition, and who therefore needs divine help. It may b
e defined as the goodness or love of God shown to th
ose who are in misery or distress, irrespective of thei
r deserts."
Compassion of God is exercised towards The afflicted
, the chastened, enemies, poor, weak, and saints. It w
as illustrated in Luke 10:33 and Luke15:20.

"The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his me

rcies never come to an end; they are new every morn
ing; great is your faithfulness."
-Lamentations 3:22-23
Christ showed His compassion to us as our High Pries
t. "Therefore he had to be made like his
brothers in every respect, so that he might become a
merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God,
to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For b
ecause he himself has suffered when tempted, he is a
ble to help those who are being tempted."(Hebrews
2:17-18)
It is a consoling thought that Christ is praying for us, e
ven when we are negligent in our prayer life; that He
is presenting to the Father those spiritual needs whic
h were not present to our minds and which we often
neglect to include in our prayers; and that He prays f
or our protection against the dangers of which we ar
e not even conscious, and against the enemies which
threaten us, though we do not notice it. He is praying
that our faith may not cease, and that we may come
out victoriously in the end. - Louis Berkhof(Systemati
c Theology)
