PUNCTUATION
Punctuation is the name for specific
kinds of marks used in writing.

They are marks used in writing to


separate parts of sentences and make
the meaning clear.

PUNCTUATION
QUESTION MARK

. ? , !
FULL STOP
COMMA

EXCLAMATION MARK
CAPITAL LETTERS
A sentence always begins with a capital
letter.
The single letter ‘I’, denoting myself, is always
written in capital.
Proper Nouns begin with capital letters even
if they fall in the middle of a sentence.
EXAMPLES
1. My father is a doctor.
2. The girl you met yesterday is my sister.
3. May I come in?
4. Raman and I are going for a movie.
5. Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka.
6. The park remains closed on Tuesday.
7. My father is taking Reeta and Ravi for a movie.
FULL STOP
A full stop ( . ) is used at the end of a sentence.

Examples :

1.We can see the ducks around the pool.


2.Priya’s house is very beautiful.
3. It is a hot day.
4.Rita broke my doll yesterday.
5.My spectacle case is broken.
COMMA
• We use a comma ( , ) between two similar word or
ideas.
Examples:

1. Raghu, Meera and Priya are good friends.


2. I went to the greengrocer, bought vegetables and
came back.
3. The elephant has a long trunk, big ears , a small
tail, two tusks and strong legs.
QUESTION MARK
A question mark ( ? ) is used at the end of a
question.

Examples:

1.Is Manu sick today?


2.What is in your bag?
3.Who is the man in the green hat?
4.Are you coming for the reception today?
5.Do you like to travel?
EXCLAMATION MARK
 We put an exclamation mark ( ! ) at the end of a
sentence that shows strong feelings, or after an
interjection.
Examples:
1.Ouch! I fell down the stairs.
2. How happy I am to see you!
3. What a beautiful picture!
4. How politely she talks!
5. That’s a lovely poem you wrote!

Radha, Sudha, Mita and Kriti are neighbours.

I want a red ball, a remote-controlled car and a book for my birthday.

That thick, black book with many colourful pictures belongs to my father.
