REALISM

Nicole Matejková 2.B

PAITING IN REALISM
Unique features:
• The Use of Color- warmer hues and color palettes such as extensive use of soft browns, warm reds,
black and ivory hues. Modern-day realists still use warm palettes, but play more with cooler color combinations to
create startling effects.
• The Importance of Detail-Completely opposite of the soft look of romantic Impressionism, Realist
painters include as much detail as possible in their work. Shadows, light reflecting off of surfaces, depth perception and
perspective
• Common Subjects in Realism-French artists initially used realism to sarcastically depict political issues
and problems. Other artists incorporated realism by painting scenes of the working class, rural and urban life and
portraits dealing with the naked body. Artists strove to create works that were raw and natural -- as close to a
photograph as possible

French Title: Le Marché aux Chevaux

Artist: Rosa Bonheur
Year: 1853

A BURIAL AT ORNANS
Example of typical realistic painting
• French Title: Un enterrement à Ornans
• Artist: Gustave Courbet
• Year: 1850

This painting depicts the funeral of the great-uncle of Gustave Courbet in the small town of
Ornans in France.I think that this painting represent realism very well, because you can see all
the unique features there.
SCULPRURE IN REALISM
• New Sculpture irrespective of subject matter or conceptual reference
• The themes of sculptures ware work, ordinary life and also represented queens and kings of
some important places

Roman Realism, the author is unknown

• New casting techniques, desired effect in bronze
• Sculptures were more detailed
• They did not have too much artistic freedom due toto selling their
work and high prices of sculptures

Realistic sculpture now
• Luo Li Rong is a Chinese. At a very young age she began sculpting and she studied
art at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. There she immersed herself
in classical figurative sculpture. The goal was to be one in spirit with the model.
ARCHITECTURE

nature of building
forms and materials
in the buildings
they designed

as concrete,iron

Iron and steel architecture

poor

LITERATURE- Magical Realism
Personally, searching throuh the interned this fascinates me
• Magical realism is a literary genre that has sometimes frustrated critics who have
been unable to define the style with any precision
• Magical realism as the name would imply, is a story that is set in a mostly realistic
setting, but with some magical elements. Often, magical realism features social or
political commentary.
Most popular authors of this ganre
• Latin American writers - Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende
• American authors Toni Morrison and Alice Hoffman
• Japanese magical realist Haruki Murakami
A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings
• Example of magical realism
• Written by Gabriel García Márquez

• ABOUT : tells the story of Pelayo and his wife, who find an old
man with wings in their courtyard after killing crabs in a
rainstorm. Neighbor informs them that the old man is an
angel. They decide to let him go, but when they return to the
courtyard at dawn the entire community has arrived to see
the angel. Wife has the idea of charging a 5 cent admission fee
for seeing the angel; they are soon rich. Later they neglect the
angel. He gets increasingly frail and sickly, and they fear that
he will die. He recovers, however, and one day Elisenda
watches him fly away, to her great relief.

• Signs of realism: combining the homely details of Pelayo and

wife’s life with fantastic elements such as a flying man and a
spider woman and fairy tale. There is a mingling of the
fantastic and ordinary in all the descriptions, including the
swarms of crabs
MUSIC
• For middle or lower class
• Just like in music, the song is usually real and has all true information
• You can hear the light, calm melody with many musical instruments, done by whole
orchestra

Examples of music in Realism: by Camille Saint Saens

and by Saint-Saëns

Realistic MUSIC now
• Nowadays the orchestra is not used in a music as it was and it does not
focus on the music in backround, but on the lyrics which are strongly
realistic. Although the music is calm and chill to listen
