A. SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE (PASSIVE VOICE)
Passive voice in the form of simple present tense is usually used in daily activities, or in doing
something that has become a habit. Examples of these activities include waking, sleeping, eating, and
bathing. Slightly different from the active voice which uses verb 1, in general passive voice simple
present tense uses to be + verb 3 (past participle).

If the passive voice sentence wants to be changed into a negative sentence, then simply add "not" after
"to be". If you want to change the passive sentence into a question form, then we simply move "to be"
to the beginning of the sentence.
The Formula of Passive Voice of Simple Present Tense
1. Positive sentence
S + To Be (am/is/are) + V3/past participle
Example:
• English is studied by us
• The music is listened by him

2. Negative sentence
S + To Be (am/is/are) + not + V3/past participle
Example:
• English is not studied by us
• The music is not listened by him

3. Interrogative sentence
To Be (am/is/are) + S + V3/past participle + ?
Example:
• Is English studied by us?
• Is the music listened by him?
B. SIMPLE PAST TENSE (PASSIVE VOICE)
Simple past tense sentence are always marked by the use of information about the time yesterday, last
week, last night, two weeks ago, and so on. Unlike the simple present tense which uses the auxiliary
verb "am/is/are", the passive voice in the simple past tense is formed by the auxiliary verb
"was/were". Was is used for singular subjects (I, She, He and It), while were is for plural subjects
(You, We and They).
The Formula of Passive Voice of Simple Past Tense
1. Positive sentence
S + was/were + V3
Example:
• His parent’s car was stolen by the thief last night
• Some poems were written by Deby last month

2. Negative sentence
S + was/were + not + V3
Example:
• His parent’s car was not stolen by the thief last night
• Some poems were not written by Deby last month

3. Interrogative sentence
Was/were + S + V3 + ?
Example:
• Was his parent’s car stolen by the thief last night?
• Were some poems written by Deby last month?
C. SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE (PASSIVE VOICE)
Future tense is divided into two forms, namely with capital "will/shall" and "going to". The two forms of this
formula will also apply to passive voice future tense sentences. To make simple future tense sentences, there are
several types of adverbs of time that we usually use, such as tomorrow, next time, soon, later, and so on.

Notes:
 If you use “will/shall” it means an event/activity that is still being planned.
 If you use "to be (be) + going to" it means an event / activity that is certain to be carried out / spontaneous
The Formula of Passive Voice of Simple Future Tense

1. Positive sentence
a. S + Will + Be + V3
Example: An action movie will be watched this evening
b. S + Be Going To + Be + V3
Example: Asian food is going to be cooked by my mother

2. Negative sentence:
a. S + Will Not + Be + V3
Example: A new laptop will not be bought by her
b. S + Be Not Going To + Be + V3
Example: My guitar lesson is not going to be started tomorrow

3. Interrogative sentence:
a. Will + S + Be + V3 + ?

b. Be + S + Going To + Be +V3 + ?

D. MODALS VERB (PASSIVE VOICE)
Modals are a type of verb used to express ability, possibility, permission, or obligation.
Examples of words used are, may, must, might, will, shall, can, could, ought to, and should.
Writing passive sentences with modals serves to emphasize the changes received by objects or
people.
The Formula of Passive Voice of Modal Verbs

S + Modal + Be + V3 + O
Example: The project must be done by the students today

2. Negative sentence
S + Modal + not + Be + V3 + O
Example: The project must not be done by the students today
