Constructing

Supply Type
or
Constructed
Response Type
• Another useful device for testing lower order thinking skills
is the supply type of tests. Like the multiple choice test, the
items in this kind of test consist of a stem and a blank
where the students would write the correct answer.
• Example: The study of life and living organisms is called
___________.
– Supply type tests depend heavily on the way the stems
are constructed. These tests allow for one and only one
answer and, hence, often test only the students' recall of
knowledge.
COMPLETION
TYPE
or
SHORT
ANSWER TEST
Objectives:
• At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. distinguish the two ways of constructing completion type
or short answer type of test orally;
b. recognize all the types of completion test;
c. familiarize at least 90% of the guidelines in constructing
completion type or short answer test;
d. differentiate the advantages and disadvantages of a
completion or short answer test accurately; and
e. identify faults or loopholes in defective completion test
items accurately.
COMPLETION TYPE
or
SHORT ANSWER TEST

is also called Supply

or Constructed
Response Test.
There are two ways of constructing completion
type or short answer type of test: Question form or
Complete the statement form.
Example:

Question Form Completion Form

1. Which supply type item is 1. Supply type item used to

used to measure the ability measure the ability to
to organize and integrate organize and integrate
material? material is called _______.

Question Form Completion Form

2. What are the incorrect 2. The incorrect options in a

options in a multiple-choice multiple-choice test items are
item called? called _______.

3. What do you call a polygon 3. A polygon with five sides is

that has five sides? called ________.

4. What is the most complex

4. The most complex level in the
level in the Bloom’s taxonomy of
Bloom’s taxonomy of cognitive
cognitive domain?
domain is called _______.

5. Which test item measures the 5. The test item that measures
greatest variety of learning the greatest variety of learning
outcomes? outcomes is called ________.
Types of Completion Tests
Identification
Example:
It refers to the process of summing
up results of tests, giving them some
meaning based on value judgments.
____________
ENUMERATION
Example:
List down the three branches of
Philippine government.
1. ___________________
2. ___________________
3. ___________________
FILLING THE BLANKS
Example:
Bayang Magiliw
Perlas ng __________.
Alab ng puso
Sa __________ mo’y buhay.
Duyan ka ng __________
Sa manlulupig
‘Di ka __________.
• It is, however, possible to construct supply type of tests that will
test higher order thinking as the following example shows:
Example: Write an appropriate synonym for each of the following.
Each blank corresponds to a letter:
Metamorphose: __ __ __ __ __ __
Flourish: __ __ __ __
• The appropriate synonym for the first is CHANGE with six (6)
letters while the appropriate synonym for the second is GROW
with four (4) letters.
• Notice that these questions require not only mere recall of words
but also understanding of these words
• Another example of a completion type of text that measures
higher order -- thinking skill is given below:
Example: Write G if the item on the left is greater than the item on
the right; L if the item on the left is less than the item on the right: E
if the item on the left equals the item on the right and D if the
relationship cannot be determined.
1. Square root of 9 ___________ a. -3
2. Square of 25 ___________ b. 615
3. 36 inches 4. ___________ c. 3 meters
4. 4 feet ___________ d. 48 inches
5. 1 kilogram ___________ e. I pound
GUIDELINES IN CONSTRUCTING
COMPLETION TYPE OR SHORT
ANSWER TEST:

1. Avoid indefinite statements.

2. Avoid over mutilated statements.
3. Omit keywords and phrases, rather
than trivial details.
4. Avoid lifting statements directly from
the text.
5. Whenever the indefinite article is
required before a blank, write it in the
form a (n).
6. Make the blanks be in uniform length.
7. Avoid grammatical clues to the
correct answer.
8. Try to choose statements in which there is
only one correct response for the blanks.
9. The required response should be a single
word or a brief phrase.
10. Arrange the test so that the answers are
in a column at the right of the sentences.
11. Avoid unordered series within an
item.
12. Prepare a scoring key that contains
all acceptable answers.
13. Allow one point for each correctly
filled blank.
1. Avoid overmutilated sentences like this test
item. Give enough clue to the student.

The produced _________ by the _________

is used by the green _________ to change the
_________ and _________ into _________.
This process is called _________.
2. Avoid open-ended item. There should be
only one acceptable answer. This item is open-
ended, hence no good test item.

Ernest Hemingway wrote ___________.

3. The blank should be at the end or near the
end of the sentence. The question must first be
asked before an answer is expected. Like the
matching type of test, the stem (where the
question is packed) must be in the first
column.
4. Ask question on more significant item not
on trivial matter.

Jose Rizal was born on June _______ 1861.

There are other more significant items to ask

other than specific birthdates.
5. The length of the blanks must not suggest
the answer. So better to make the blanks
uniform in size.
A part of speech that names persons, places
or things is _________________.
A word used to connect clauses or sentences
or to coordinate words in the same clause is
called _________________.
ADVANTAGES OF A
COMPLETION OR SHORT
ANSWER TEST
1. It covers a broad range of topic in a
short span of time.
2. It is easier to prepare and less time
consuming compared to a multiple- choice
and matching type of test.
3. It can assess effectively the lower level of
Bloom’s Taxonomy. It can assesses recall of
information, rather than recognition.
4. It reduces the possibility of guessing the
correct answer because it requires recall
compared to true or false and multiple-
choice items.
5. It covers greater amount of content than the
matching type test.
DISADVANTAGES OF A
COMPLETION OR SHORT
ANSWER TEST

1. It is only appropriate for questions

that can be answered with short responses.
2. There is a difficulty in scoring when the
questions are not prepared properly and clearly.
The question should be clearly stated so that the
answer of the student is clear.
3. It can assess only knowledge, comprehension
and application in Blooms’ taxonomy of cognitive
domain.
4. It is not adaptable in measuring
complex learning outcomes.

5. Scoring is tedious and time

consuming.
IDENTIFYING FAULTS/LOOPHOLES IN
DEFECTIVE COMPLETION TEST ITEMS

 Avoid using more than one blank per item.

1. The evolutionary theory of __________ is based on the

principle of __________.

5. __________ was the first American to

__________.
Revised: The first American to walk on the
moon was __________.
ACTIVITY:
Instruction: In this activity you are going to
identify whether the following completion test
items are GOOD or POORLY constructed. If it
is good, state your reason and the specific
guideline you think the item follows, and if
otherwise, revise the item and be sure to also
state the specific guideline you used to correct
the item.
1. The authors of the first performance test of
intelligence were _____________.
( POOR )
2. Jose Rizal was born on__________.
(GOOD)
3. The name of the largest city in Puerto Rico is
