FIRST HOMECOMING
RIZAL WAS DETERMINED TO COME BACK TO
THE PHILIPPINES FOR THE FOLLOWING
REASONS :
• To operate oh his mother’s eyes
• To serve his people who had long been oppressed by
the Spanish tyrants
• To find out for himself how the Noli Me Tangere and his
other writings were affecting the Filipino and Spaniards
in the Philippines
• To inquire why Leonor Rivera remained silent
JULY 29, 1887
• Rizal wrote to his father, announcing his
homecoming
DELIGHTFUL TRIP TO MANILA
• Rizal left Rome by train for Marseilles
• July 03 1887 Rizal boarded the steamer djemnah , the
same steamer which brought him to Europe 5years ago

HAPPY HOMECOMING
• August 08 1887 – Rizal returned to Calamba, his family
welcomed him affectionally, with plentiful tears of joy.
His family become worried about his safety.
WHEN RIZAL ARRIVED IN CALAMBA

IN CALAMBA
• Rizal established a medical clinic . His first patiend was
his mother, who was almost blind, Rizal treated her
eyes but could not perform any surgical operation
because her cataracts were not yet ripe. New of the
arrival of a great doctor from Germany spread far and
wide. Patients from manila and other province flocked
to calamba.
• He was called “Doctor Ulliman ”
because he came from Germany.
Within few months he was able to
earn P900 as a physician. By
February 1888, he earned a total of
P5000 as medical fees.
• Rizal did not selfishly devote all his time to enrishing
himself. He opened a gymnasium for young folks and
introduced European sports, fencing and shooting to
discourage them form cockfighting and gambling.
• He painted several beautiful landscapes in calamba
• He translated German poem of von wildernath in
tagalong .
• Rizal suffered one failure during his six months of
sojourn in Calamba. He failed to see Leonor Rivera

Some of his observations about Hong Kong as written in his
diary are as follows:

1. The celebration of the Chinese New year was quite very


noisy.
2. Chinese theatres were usually animated due to the
different percussion instruments used by the participants.
3. The Lauriat party, wherein the guests where served a
variety of dishes, show lavishness and hospitality among
the Chinese
4. The Dominican Order, the richest religious order in Hong
Kong. Had millions of dollars deposited in various banks
earning very high interests.
5. The graveyards for Catholics, Protestants and Muslims
were well maintained.
On February 22, 1888, Rizal left Hong Kong on board the
vessel ss Oceania
Rizal arrived in Japan on February 28 1888 though
yokohanna and stayed at Tokyo for a few days. Later
on he stayed on the Spanish legation for a month.

-Rizal was impress with the city of Tokyo and its


people. Some of his impressions were the following:
1. The scenic beauty of the country.
2.The cleanliness, politeness, and industry of the
people.
3.The picturesque dress and simple charm of the
Japanese people.
4. The existence of few thieves in Japan.
5. The beggars rarely seen on the streets of the city.
Rizal arrived in Japan on February
28 1888 though yokohanna and
stayed at Tokyo for a few days.
Later on he stayed on the Spanish
legation for a month.
Rizal’s romance with O-Sei-San began spring of March. After moving to
the Spanish Legation, Rizal saw her walking near the gate of the legation.
He learned from the gardener of that the beautiful lady was Seiko Usui,
call O-Sei-San. Rizal and the gardener waited for seiko to pass the
legation gate one afternoon. Though the intercession of the gardener, he
came to know the Japanese lady. In Seiko, Rizal saw the ideals of
womanhood. The friendship established between Rizal and Seiko
developed into a love affair. Owing to the irresistible beauty of Seiko,
Rizal became tempted to stay for good in Japan. Nevertheless, Rizal felt
that he had other.
• He arrived in the United States on April 28,
1888 on board the English steamer, Belgic.
• Rizal’s entry point in the U.S. was San Francisco.
Here he stayed at the palace hotel for two
days. He left for Oakland and passed through
Sacramento, Reno, Ogden, Omaha, Chicago,
Albany bound to New York city.

American continent
• Some of the good impression Rizal had of the US are
the following:
• > Material progress of the country.
• > Drive and energy of the American people
• > The natural beauty of the land
• > The high standard of living
Rizal also had negative impressions of the US. His
negative impression are as follows:
 Non-existence of true civil liberty

 The existence of racial prejudice

 The valuing of money over human life

On may 16 1888, Rizal left new York for Liverpool,


England on board the vessel city of Rome
RIZAL IN LONDON
• Rizal arrived at Liverpool on may 24, 1888 after staying
one night at Adelphi Hotel, he moved to London. Rizal
resided in London from May 1888 to march 1889, he
opted to stay in the city and make his second home for
these reason:
 To improve his knowledge of the English language:

 To study and annotate morga’s Sucesos de las islas


Filipinas:
 To carry on his fight against the Spanish tyranny safety.
GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS FROM HOME

While he was in London Rizal received a


good and bad news from the Philippines.
Notable among bad and good news that
was able to know were the following:
Persecution of the Filipino Patriots

Persecution of Calamba tenants, including Rizal’s


family and relatives
Exile of Manuel T. Hidalgo to Bohol

Furious attacks on Rizal by senator Salamanca and


and Vida in the Spanish cortes
Arrest and incarnation of of Laureano Vida

Rev. Vicente Garcia’s defense on Noli against the


attacks of the friars.
Rizal became attracted to Gertrude Becket.
Rizal falling in love with Seiko, then with
Gertrude seems to imply that he was not
desperately in love with Leonor Rivera
however, he suppressed his emotions for
Gertrude when he learned that she with him.

Philippines island was publishes in Mexico in
1605 to provide European readers information
about the Philippines.
THERE WERE BASICALLY THREE PURPOSES FOR
RIZAL’S ANNOTATION OF THE SUCESOS:

1. To awaken the consciousness of the filipinos of their


glorious or dignified ways of the past:
2. To correct what has been distorted and falsified
about the philippines prior to the spanish conquest:
3. To prove that the filipinos were civilized,even before
the coming of the spaniards.
With the new edition of Morga’s Sucesos, Rizal was able to
produce the first history book of the Philippines, written for
the Filipinos
FOUNDING A ASOCIACION
While Rizal was very much preoccupied with his annotation of
Morga’s scesos, he learned of the plan of the Filipino
expatriates in Barcelona to establish a patriotic society that
shall work for reforms from the Spanish government. This
organization called Asociaxion La Solidaridad, was established
on december 31, 1888. the officers of this patriotic society
