Fiber to Fabric: Silk

Do anyone know the history of silk?

One day a Chinese queen was

sitting under a mulberry tree
when she poured her tea in her
cup a cocoon fell inside the hot
tea which became into strands
of silk.
Life cycle of silk worm
• Moth • Egg

• Cocoon • Larva
Process of making silk
When the egg is hatched a small larva comes out
of it .The larva will eat the mulberry leaves. When it
becomes bigger until it ate enough it will wrap
itself . The wrapped larva is called the cocoon. The
cocoon is being taken for the process of silk
formation. The cocoon is being boiled at high
temperature. So that the cocoon will spread into
threads of silk. The strand is then sent to a silk
weaving machine. The silk is weaved to form silk
cloth.
Health hazards of silk industry
➜ Silk workers who process raw silk often suffer
from asthma and respiratory diseases caused
by inhalation of vapours from boiling cocoon.
➜ Workers need to dip their hands frequently in
boiling water to judge whether silk threads
have become soft to be extracted or not. This
causes burning of skin blisters and open
injuries.
