RANGE AND MEAN

DEVIATION
Prepared by: Lovely Joyce J. Tagasa
Range
Of all the measures of variability, the range is the easiest and quickest way to
determine.
How to find the range?
1.Arrange the numbers from smallest to largest.
2. Subtract the lowest value from the largest
Formula for the Range:
R = H- L Where: r= range
H= Highest score
L= Lowest Score

2
Example:
1. The Scores of Maria in her math quizzes are as follows:
12, 25, 27, 29, 36, 38,43,50 and 62. Find its range.
Solution:
Highest Score(H)= 62 Lowest Score(L)=12
r =H-L
62-12
r =50

3
2. What is the range of the following set of numbers?

10, 25,87,45,33,21,7,65,72
1. Arrange the numbers from smallest to largest
7, 10,21, 25,33,45,65,72,87
2. Subtract the lowest value from the largest
R = H- L
87- 7
R= 80

4

3. The car sales representative sold 5 cars
amounting as follows:

550,000 875,000
475,000 655,000
1,680,000

5

SOLUTION:

1. 475,000, 550,000, 655,000, 875,000, 1,680,000

2. R= H-L
1,680,000- 475,000
R= 1,205,000

4. 14, 19, 20, 24, 25, 28

R= ?

6
Interpretation:
The range is greatly influence by extreme or outlying values.
Such values are often referred to as outliers and are defined as
values that are inconsistent with the rest of the data, since it gives
only information to extreme value and most values within the rest
of the observations. Hus, although the range is the quickest and
easiest measure of dispersion to calculate, its interpretation
should be treated with some caution.

7
MEAN DEVIATION
The Mean Deviation is defined as a
statistical measure that is used to calculate
the average deviation from the mean value
of the given set of data. It is sometimes
called the mean absolute deviation.

8
MEAN DEVIATION FOR UNGROUPED DATA
x= each value of the given data

MD = n= number of values

Example 1:

Find the mean deviation of the following

ungrouped data.
10, 12, 12 ,14

9

Formula:
10

12 10+ 12 + 12 + 14

Step 2: Subtract the mean from each observation

10 10-12= -2

12 12-12= 0

12 12-12= 0

14 14-12= 2

Step 3. Write down the absolute value of

10 10-12= -2 2 each of the differences in step 2.

12 12-12= 0 0
Step 4.Solve for the Mean Deviation

12 12- 12= 0 0 MD =

14 14- 12= 2 2 4

EXAMPLE 2:
Find the mean deviation of the following ungrouped frequency distributions
12, 13, 14, 15,16,17,18
x
Step 1: Calculate for the mean
= 12+ 13 +14 + 15 + 16 +17+ 18 12 12- 15 = -3
7 13 13- 15 = -2
= 105
7 14 14- 15 = -1
15 15 15- 15 = 0

Step 2: Subtract the mean from 16 16- 15 = 1

each observation 17 17- 15 = 2

18 18- 15 = 3

13
x
Step 3. Write down the 12 12- 15 = -3 3
absolute value of each of the
differences in step 2. 13 13- 15 = -2 2

Step 4.Solve for the Mean 14 14- 15 = -1 1

Deviation
15 15- 15 = 0 0

MD =
16 16- 15 = 1 1

MD = 12 17 17- 15 = 2 2
