Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of
the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Where Does Your Joy Come From? 1. Our Joy must Come to Who He Is Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. - The congregation feels guilty because they see their sin in the light of Gods word. ( when we see our sin look at the Cross) - Their knowledge about God is incomplete; they see God as Holy and righteous, but they forget the reality that God is also showing them so much mercy and love. - Often times we lose our Joy because we compare ourselves to others, not knowingly that whatever success you have in life, the true joy comes only in knowing who He is our God. • If we are weak, He is strong ( so that He will become our strength ) • If we fail, He never fails his word are true • If we lack wisdom, He is the giver of wisdom for everything comes from Him
• If everyone forsake you, He will never leave you
• If you are a sinner, He always forgives • If you are empty, He is the fullness for everything comes from Him Jeremiah 9:23-24 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this:
that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD. (If we just see ourselves in the light of the Gospel, then our joy will be complete ) 2. Our Joy Must Come From What He Has Done Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. - Often times when we know that God being Holy means he hates us for being sinners, and from that we cultivate in our minds that our joy comes from our own performance. (And from that we have a view of Gods holiness and low view of Gods love.) ( the reason all performs to gain more love. ) But if someone knows that they are love not base on what - But the love of God is not the same of our love, If God is eternal, so is His love also. His Love knows no beginning ( so is the phrase from the foundation of the world Gods love us. From our mothers womb he knows us, before Jacob has done good to please Him he love Jacob over Esau) - In this world we must prove something to be accepted and all we feel that it is not enough and we cannot have joy but in Gods love He love us enough. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this While we were still sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8 ) 3. Our Joy Must Come On What He Has Promised This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Why is that day called Holy? Because God shows everyone that He fulfills His promises; He is the God who is worthy to believe in. ( seeing ourselves in the future our failure to our promise takes away our joy) What makes the joy of the Lord our strength? The command do not grieve is easy to follow because God demonstrate to them that He is a faithful God. So our obedience is the result of trusting God in what he has promised. ( father who promise to treat them with ice cream if they behave well ) So the commandment of God is not a burden for us because we are seeing that God is a rewarder to those who diligently seek Him. Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will be joyful in God my Savior. ( Habakkuk 3:17-18 )
( So the command rejoice even the midst of trial is possible because we are not seeing the present but the faithfulness of Him who will deliver us. ) What is the source of this knowledge and this faith that leads to joy and energizes obedience? What's the source of it? The Word is the only source of this true knowledge. But getting into the Word, with the primary endeavor to know who God is, know what God has decreed, know what God has done, and what He will do with you. Is the only way to find the true meaning of Joy. “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
