Three Comrades

1936
“With blinded eyes I stared at the sky, this grey, endless sky of
a crazy god, who had made life and death for his amusement”.
The title and the author
The title of the book is Three
Comrades. It’s a novel, written
by the German genius of that
time, Erich Maria Remarque.
The novel "Three Comrades" is
part of a trilogy of novels about
the tragedy of the "lost
generation", i.e about young
people whose lives were
distorted by a terrible and bloody
war, which had a great impact on
their lives, breaking the psyche
and faith in humanism and
humanity.
The characters
The year is 1928 .There, we have the
main character, who is Robert Lohkamp
and minor ones, his friends- Otto Köster
and Gottfried Lenz.
Robert Lohkamp experienced the
horrific events during the First War, after
which, he got PTSD (post-traumatic
stress disorder). He shares these
experiences with his school friends Otto
Köster and Gottfried Lenz, with whom
he runs an auto-repair shop. The
environment is truly shocking and
hazardous, because the number of
jobless is growing and it’s marked by
increasing violence between the left and
right.
The plot.
One day, three friends decide to go a bar, where Robert Lohkamp meets his first and last love- Patrice Hollmann.
She is a young, wonderful woman with an upper-middle-class background and a good sense of humor.
In a nutshell, Patrice Hollmann falls in love in Robert after a few dates, but she has a big secret, that she doesn’t
tell him. Everything becomes clear when Patrice and Rob have a summer holiday, where Pat has a seizure. Rob
realizes she is sick with tuberculosis, and nothing good comes after. He and his friends do everything to make her
survive…but she dies.

The plot and my opinion
The plot is really gripping and absorbing. I read it non-
stop for a couple of days because I wanted to know if Pat
could survive or not. I hoped, that there would be a
Happy End and everything would be great…
It’s a safe to say that this book is absolutely touching and
memorable. All the characters are really likeable and
believeable.
As for me, the book is successful because it is relevant
today. A lot of people after the war have this syndrom and
try to live with it. People still can die from tuberculosis
and get it everywhere. Remarque described all these
feelings and experiences. He tried to depict the lives of
people, to show how the war changes the personality,
how it affects worldview and lingers in the memories.
The novel also highlights the true friendship of three
comrades - Robbie, Lenz and Otto, who helped and
supported each other so as not to feel alone in this world.
It shows sincere love between people from different
societies, and the main character Pat, despite her serious
illness, teaches us how to appreciate life, be able to enjoy
every minute and enjoy the little things.
In conclusion, the book “Three Comrades” is an excellent story well
worth reading. It touches you, tries to get into your heart and makes you
delve into that time and understand our characters and their acts. Of
course, I recommend it everyone.

Today, I want to present my favorite book which I can re-read all the time and that’s why it looks like a dog-eared paperback.
