Solving Quadratic Equations

by Factoring and Extracting

the Square Roots
Objectives:
• Illustrate a quadratic equation
• Recall previously learned lessons needed in
solving quadratic equations
• Solve quadratic equations by extracting the
square roots
• Solve quadratic equations by factoring
Quadratic Equation
• A
quadratic equation in terms of x is a second-
degree polynomial equation written in
Standard form as:

• Where a, b, and c are real numbers with a ǂ 0.

Why do you think is it not allowed for the
value of a to be zero?

• The quadratic term of a quadratic equation

cannot be equal to zero because if it is, the
resulting equation will become linear in
nature.
Example 1.1. Determine whether the given
equation is quadratic or not.

•

a. z
•
- It is a quadratic equation which can be written
in standard form as

b. z
- Not a quadratic equation. Since the degree of
the equation is 1, it is only a linear equation.
•c.
- A quadratic polynomial. However, since it does
not have an equal sign, it is still not a
quadratic equation.

d.
- Not a quadratic equation since it is a third-
degree equation.
What does solving a quadratic equation
mean?

• Solving quadratic equation means identifying

the value/s of the variable that, when
substituted to the equation, will result to a
true statement.
Important property in solving quadratic
equations.
• Zero-Product Property

• If the product of two numbers is 0, then it

follows that at least one of the two factors
must be 0.
• Mathematical symbols written as: If ab = 0,
then a=0 or b = 0, where a and b are real
numbers.
Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring

• Steps
to solve quadratic equations by factoring:
Step 1: Transform the quadratic equation in standard
form (
Step 2: Factor the polynomial side of the equation.
Step 3: Use Zero-Product Property to equate each
factor to zero.
Step 4: Solve the resulting equations.
Step 5: Check if the obtained roots are accurate by
substituting them to the original equation.
