Stove in Chest

Done by Asma Al-Raey

Stove in Chest

Definition
Depression of a portion of the chest wall due to severe chest
injury, which contributes to forming a flail segment.
Stove in Chest
Symptoms
Severe chest pain

Difficulty breathing

Tenderness in the area of your chest where the

bone has come away

Uneven rising and falling of your chest when

breathing
Stove in Chest

Chest compressing such as CPR

Traumatic injuries

Traumatic (Hitting the chest

without penetrating of skin)
Treatment
Causes
Surgical stabilisation

Internal pneumatic fixation

physiologic stabilisation with

intubation and IPPV must be
initiated.

COMPLICATION OF PATHOLOGICAL

Definition
Morbidity and mortality associated with thoracic trauma are
due to the disruption of respiration , circulation, or both.
COMPLICATION OF PATHOLOGICAL

Diagnosis

The common outcome is the development of Respiratory compromise can occur due to
ventilation-perfusion mismatch and decreased direct injury to the airway or lungs , as is the
pulmonary compliance , this then results in case with pulmonary contusions , or from
hypoventilation and hypoxia , which may interference in the mechanics of breathing , as
necessitate intubation . with rib fractures .
COMPLICATION OF PATHOLOGICAL

Complications of cardiac injury

Circulatory compromise occurs in the setting of significant
blood loss , decreased venous return , or direct cardiac
injury .
COMPLICATION OF PATHOLOGICAL

Complication of hemothorax
Intrathoracic bleeding most commonly manifests
as hemothorax in both blunt and penetrating
trauma , and a massive hemothorax can lead to
hypotension and hemodynamic shock .
COMPLICATION OF PATHOLOGICAL

Complications of pneumothorax
The main symptoms of a pneumothorax are sudden chest
. pain and shortness of breath

The severity of symptoms may depend on the extent of

. the lung atelectasis
COMPLICATION OF PATHOLOGICAL

Complication of lung injuries

Bluish coloring around nails and lips , this means
. there is a lack of oxygen in the blood

Chest pain , often when you inhale

Cough, Fever , Fast heart rate

Pneumothorax

Definition
Pneumothorax

What is a pneumothorax?

The air enters via a defect in the visceral

pleura (e.g. ruptured bulla) or the parietal Air within the pleural cavity (i.e. between
pleura (e.g. puncture following rib fracture) visceral and parietal pleura)
Pneumothorax

Types of Pneumothorax
Simple
Mediastinum remains central
Clinical condition stable
Can wait for CXR to confirm diagnosis

Tension
Clinical condition unstable.
Progressive build up of air in the pleural space, causing a
shift of the heart and mediastinal structures away from
side of pneumothorax.
Do not wait for CXR to confirm diagnosis.
