Germany wanted to establish a vast empire to gain
an important position in the international sphere
By defeating France in the Franco-Prussian war [1870],
Germany seized the mineral-rich provinces of Alsace
and Lorraine.

Rising nationalism was also a factor in the
Balkans, where Slavic Serbs and others
sought independence and autonomy from
the political domination of Austria-
Hungary.
It was this pan-Slavic nationalism that
inspired the assassination of Archduke Franz
Ferdinand in Sarajevo in June 1914, an event
that led directly to the outbreak of WW1.
THE ARMAMENT RACE ~ “ too much of

• From 1904 to 1914, a naval arms race between the United Kingdom and Germany took place. British concern about
rapid increase in German naval power resulted in a costly building competition of battleships and weaponry. This
tense arms race lasted until 1914, when the war broke out.
Germany began to build a powerful navy and also dug the Kiel Canal deeper
to shelter its battle ships underwater.

Most countries were compelled to increase their arms due to the

fear instilled when one country increases its arms.

In the years leading up to the outbreak of the war, major European military powers scrambled to increase
their empires by establishing new colonies and territories in such places as Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.

The colonies not only increased their supremacy and wealth but also
provided themrawmaterials such as cotton and rubber.

Britain and France had a secret agreement in 1904 according to which Britain
controlled Egypt while France tookover Morocco

This was opposed by Germany, who claimed that “all nations should
have equal rights to trade with Morocco”

This caused a lot of friction between the nations before the main war

Bosnia was annexed by Austria in 1908. The people of Bosnia This led to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand,
wanted a union with the other Slavic States as they were the crown prince of Austria, and his wife Sophie on June 28th, 1914.
Serbs by ancestry.
They were assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia, by nineteen year
old Gavrilo Princip. But the bigger conspirators were the members
of a secret society known as The Black Hand, and the truth was that
Princip was an Austrian subject. This was the immediate cause of the war.

Storyline of the assassination….

On Sunday June 28th, 1914, Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie travelled in a motorcade
Franz Ferdinand and his wife were asked to visit through Sarajevo; their car was open topped and there was little security. The would-be

in the road to decide which route to take, Princip found himself next to the car.
He drewhis pistol and shot the Archduke and his wife at point-blankrange. He
then tried to shoot himself, but the crowd stopped him. He then tookpoison, but
it was old and simply caused himto vomit; the police then arrested himbefore
he was lynched. Within half an hour, both targets were dead.
