 To assist an individual to understand self

 To enable the individual about the available options

 To improve the individual ability to make decisions and


changes accordingly

 To empower the individual to enhance the knowledge,


skills and attitude to fit career choice

Definitions

 Career: A career is an individual's journey through


learning, work and other aspects of life

 Guidance: Advise or show the right direction

 Counseling: A process to help individual or a group of


individuals to solve their problems as well take right
decisions

o Career counseling is done in the school or at
the advisor/client's home on a one on one basis

o Requires confidentiality most of the time

o Career counseling is more like an informal chat between a


client and an advisor

o One can use visual aids, storytelling, and flip charts as


additional aids

o Career counseling must be two ways


Six steps of effective counseling
o GREET the clients (establishing rapport)

o Gathering information from clients about their life

o TELL (advisor information) : Specific information, can be


retained longer, especially if the client is encouraged to
ask questions

o HELP the client : The decision-making or problem-


solving moment

o EXPLAIN to the client : Once the client has made a choice , the
advisor help the client remember key information specific to that
decision

o RETURN/REFER : Return visits or referrals should be planned


Principles of Career Counseling

o An effective career counseling requires a quite place to


ensure that all necessary information, client’s concerns and
career requirements are discussed and addressed effective

o Confidentiality must be ensured

o It is essential that career counseling takes place in a


non- judgmental, accepting and caring atmosphere.

o The client should be able to understand the language the


advisor
