What is
communication?
Communication is the act of giving,
receiving, and sharing information --
in other words, talking or writing, and
listening or reading. Good communicators
listen carefully, speak or write clearly, and
respect different opinions.
Communication plays an important
role in your life. It serves many
functions in order to help you share
thoughts and ideas with individuals
and with groups of people.

CONTROL
Communication functions as a form of CONTROL.

1. Communication helps regulate actions and behavior.

2. This function is also demonstrated by the simple act of


telling someone to be quiet or encouraging someone to
continue discussing the topic.
Control is observable if we focus on the Verbal and Nonverbal cues used by the
Speaker to achieve his/her purpose.

A. Verbal cues are the specific words chosen and used. Both speaker and
listener should be respectful of each other’s culture as well as of their age,
gender, social status, and religion.

B. Nonverbal cues include hand gestures, bodily action, vocal tone, and eye
contact.

SOCIAL
INTERACTION
Communication functions to allow SOCIAL INTERACTION.

1. Communication is meant for sharing and conveying


messages, expressions and information.

2. Social Interaction allows people to be connected with one


another.
Social interaction uses the most verbal and nonverbal cues
with the most adaptation for the simple reason that it
occurs everyday, nearly 24 hours a day.

EXPRESSION.

1. Communication is a tool to express feelings and emotions.

2. The speaker appeals to the listener’s feelings and emotions


to encourage him/her to act in a particular direction.

DISSEMINATION
Communication functions to facilitate INFORMATION
DISSEMINATION.

1. Communication functions to convey information and provide


awareness.

2. The speaker wants to make others aware of certain data,


concepts, and processes – knowledge that may useful to them.
