Albay Breeding Station

The Albay Breeding Station is located at Cabangan, Camalig, Albay.


It was established in 1947 with 20 has. Land area through the joint
efforts of the Bureau of Animal Industry and the Albay Provincial
Government, whose primary objective is to develop and promote
the Livestock Industry in the Province. It is tasked primarily in
producing high quality breeder stocks of Commercial Swine and
Native Pigs for sale and dispersal to Indigenous People (IP’s), Rural
Improvement Clubs (RIC’s) and other legitimate recipients. On the
later part of its operation, the research and other extension services
were then added as functions of the Station.

The Station sits today on a total land area of 5.0 hectares wherein
15 has. Was taken by the Provincial Government of Albay creating
the Albay Bounty Village. This was approved by Sec. Pinol last CY
2016. 1.0 hectare is devoted to forage and pasture development.
Other area were planted with root crops, salad garden, etc. This area
is a source of feeds/forage for the livestock being maintained in the
Station. The area also serves as a source of planting materials of the
farmers, both in the government farms and small livestock raisers in
Albay and Camarines Sur. It is also the primary source of farmers
and backyard raisers where they get their breeder stocks as well as
the technology and know-how for the development of their farms.
THE CENTER
SERVICES
  OFFERED:
 Focuses on the production of quality breeder stocks of pigs to upgrade the breeder base
in Bicol.
 Raise both commercial (white breeds) and native pigs
 Maintains hectares for rootcrops, vegetables, salad garden and production areas for
swine, ducks and native pigs including pasture grasses for distribution to small
livestock raisers.
 Provide Good quality Piglets for Sale as Breeders (Boar and Gilt) and fatteners.
 Maintains biogas facility and extends technical assistance on BIOGAS Installation
(TPED and Concrete Type)
 Conduct Researches on Animal Nutrition, Grasses, and other Livestock studies.
 Conduct Artificial Insemination for Swine not served by LGU’s.
 Distribution of Native Pigs, Native Chicken and Mallard Duck to Indigenous People
(IP’s), Rural Improvement Clubs (RIC’s) for Women, Farmers’ association to provide
livelihood and additional income.
 Serve as venue for Trainings, conferences and meetings with minimal fees utilized as
revolving fund.
 The technical staff and the Center Chief conduct lectures/Resource persons on Animal
production and Basic Animal Husbandry Practices.
VISION The station upholds the vision of the Department of Agriculture (DA)
which states: “A food secure-secure Philippines with prosperous farmers and fishers. It shall
collectively empower them and the private sector to increase agricultural productivity and
profitability, taking into account sustainable, competitive, and resilient technologies and
practices. Hence, its battlecry is simply “Masaganang Ani at Mataas na Kita!.

To attain the vision, the station undertakes the following activities:


• Assist the government in enhancing the livestock and poultry industry in the province
of Albay through the production of good quality breeder stocks of swine and poultry
for sale and distribution to farmers/clienteles.
• Conduct of researches on animal production and nutrition to develop Packages of
Technology (POTs) for dissemination to clients.
• Contribute to the government's campaign for a "greener" environment through the
conduct of lectures on Biogas Production and Waste Management, and Technical
Assistance in the installation of Concrete and Tubular Polyethylene Digester (TPED)
Biogas Plants, as requested by clients.
• Serve as venue for Hands-on/On-the-Job Trainings (OJTs) of students from
Agricultural Institutions on Farm Management and Basic Animal Husbandry Practices. 
• Promote people's awareness on the different programs and projects of the
Department of Agriculture (DA) through the accommodation of Lakbay-
Arals/Educational Tours, and IEC materials Distribution.
SERVICES AND DEVELOPMENTS
1. COMMERCIAL PIG PRODUCTION
One of the functions of the Station is the production
of good quality breeder sows and boars for sale to interested
backyard raisers, and for production purposes. The pure bred
animals are used to upgrade local stocks through natural
breeding and artificial insemination. The breed of the present
stocks are Duroc and Largewhite. Present stocks at the Station
include 6 Grand Parent Sows and 2 Grand Parent boars.

The Commercial Pigs are of the Largewhite and


Duroc breeds. These were procured by the DA-RFO5 Livestock
Program from John and John Farms. Offspring produced are
sold to clients as weanlings for breeding and for fattening.
Present breeder population is 12 heads, composed of two heads
of boars, six heads of sows, and 5 heads of gilts.

2. NATIVE CHICKEN PRODUCTION
Animal Stock CY 2021
Native chickens are good source of protein food. The Hen 100
chickens are raised in semi-confinement with Banaba, Pullets 133
Camarines and assorted native strains as breeder stocks. Stag 148
The stocks came from Bureau of Animal Industry-National
Swine and Poultry Research and Development Center (BAI- Rooster 20
NSPDRC) in Tiaong, Quezon and from DA-RFO 5. Some of Chicks produced 255
the eggs produced are sold to various clients like the Chicks production 1,000
Organic Trading Post (OTP) in Legazpi City and walk-in (target)
buyers, while most are subjected to mechanical incubation

to produce additional stocks, for sale and for distribution.

Established in January 2015, the native chickens were given


by the BAI-NSPRDC in Tiaong, Quezon and DA-RFO5, and
were composed of Banaba and Camarines Strain. The
project aims to produce organic native chickens for sale and
dispersal to clients. The chickens are raised in semi-
confinement, making use of various feed materials such as
commercial feeds from DA RFO 5, Madre de Agua leaves,
and corn grains produced by the station, and other legumes
and herbage produced from the Station’s Salad Garden.

3. Mallard Duck
This is an added function of the Station, the production of good
quality breeder stocks for Mallard ducks. Raised to produce ducklings
for distribution to organic farmers organization, RIC’s and Senior
Citizens. The distribution program is under the livestock, wherein the
target date will be on the 2nd quarter of this year. 300 heads is the
target distribution to be given to several organizations to provide
livelihood and increased their farm income and provide protein source
of table eggs in their homes. The Station plans to produce more eggs to
develop by-product of salted eggs and balut making as product of the
Station introduce to the walk-in clienteles and entrepreneurs.

4. NATIVE PIG PRODUCTION

The Native Pigs were sourced from the Bureau of Animal Sow 9
Industry-National Swine and Poultry Research and Development
Boar 3
Center (BAI-NSPRDC) in Tiaong, Quezon. The pigs are being
organically in response to the Memorandum issued by Hon. Proceso Junior Boar 11
J. Alcala in 2010, directing the station to establish a Techno-Demo Offspring produced 13
for Organic Pigs. Funding for the project was provided by DA-RFO5
Offspring production 108
through the Organic Agriculture Program, and the BAI through the
(targets)
Gender and Development (GAD) Program. Primary beneficiaries of
the project is the Rural-Based Organizations (RBOs), with the Rural Distribution 70
Improvement Clubs (RICs) of Camalig, Albay and organic farmers
association as priority beneficiaries of the dispersal program. At
present, there are 12 heads of native pigs at the station (3 boars and
9 sows).
Project monitoring are conducted regularly to assess the
progress of the project with close coordination with the Local
Government Units (LGU’s) through the Municipal Agricultural
Services (MAS) Office.

5. BIOGAS UTILIZATION
The station has biogas facility to
encourage livestock raisers to utilize it as an
alternative source of energy for domestic and
commercial use. Also, as our Bio-security measure
were manure of our pigs are utilized for biogas
operation. Serves as our Proper waste
management disposal and utilization creating a
friendly environment towards “Babuyang Walang
Amoy”.

6. PASTURE DEVELOPMENT
Different species of improved grasses and
legumes are planted at the two (2) hectares
pasture area such as Signal Grass, Humidicola, and
Napier Grass. Among the fodder trees are
Kakawate, Ipil-ipil, Madre de Agua, Rinsonii,
Flemingia, and Indigofera. These serve as sources
of planting materials for pasture establishment by
livestock raisers and Local Government Units
(LGUs). And at the same time as feeds for Native
Pigs and Poultry at the Station.
