2. Ditransitive complementation
Grammar
A ditransitive verb takes two objects: a Direct Object (Od) and
an Indirect Object (Oi), and can be used in the sentence
structure.

S - V - Oi - Od

He /gave / me / a new book.

S V Oi Od

I / gave / the policeman / my phone.

S V Oi Od
Indirect objects can be omitted without
affecting the meaning or function of the
rest of the sentence
Ex: She/gave/the boy/a book ~ She/gave/a book
S V Oi Od S V Od
She/bought/the boy/a white hat ~ She/bought/a white hat
S V Oi Od S V Od
Indirect objects can usually be replaced by a
corresponding prepositional phrase (Prep. P),
which normally follows the direct object
Ex: He/gave/a doll/to the girl.
S V Od P.P
He/bought/a white hat/for the girl.
S V Od P.P
Some common verbs which allow the
indirect object to be replaced by a
prepositional phrase: Ask (a question) of
John, bring to, do (a favour) for, find for,
give to, leave for/to, lend to, offer to,
owe to, pay for, read to, show to, teach
to, tell to, throw to……….

BOARD

When a clause as object in a monontransitive sentence (a) is a non-

finite or verbless and (b) has its subject expressed, this subject
behaves as though it alone were the direct object of the
superordinate verb; it can therefore be the subject in a passive
transformation. Compare (1a) and (2a) with (1b) and (2b):
(1a)Everyone believed that Kevin would invite
David to come
-> That Kevin would invite David to come was believed by everyone

Not: Kevin was believed (by everyone) would invite David to come.
(1b)Everyone believed Kevin to invite David to
come.
-> Kevin was believed (by everyone) to invite David to come.

Not: Kevin to invite David to come was believed (by everyone).

(2a)Lin thought that Jack was exeptionally lazy.

(2b)Lin thought Jack exeptionally lazy.

 Jack was thought exeptionally lazy.

BOARD

It is this divisibility of an essentially clausal

object that is the outstanding characteristic of
complex transitive complementation
A complex transitive verb takes a Direct Object
(Od) and either an Object Complement (Co) or an
Adverbial, and therefore can be used in the
following sentence structures
S - V - Od – Co
Ex: Tom’s action made his mother sad
We elected her CEO of the company
They painted the wall yellow
S - V - Od - A
In this structure, the Od is usually a NP. The
• A= Adverb
A can be:
phrase
Ex: She led me downstairs
I parked my car there
• A = Prepositional phrase
Ex: She had lunch in her bedroom
He sat next to me

. A = finite clause
Ex: You can buy it whenever you want
