BASKETBALL
BRIEF HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
The game of basketball as it is known today was
created by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 in
Springfield, Massachusetts, to condition young
athletes during cold months. Naismith was a
physical education instructor at YMCA International
Training School (now known as Springfield College)
in Springfield, Massachusetts. Upon the request of
his boss, Naismith was tasked to create an indoor
sports game to help athletes keep in shape in cold
weather. It consisted of peach baskets and a soccer
style ball.
BRIEF HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
Basketball was introduced in the Philippines by the Young men’s Christian Association
(YMCA) of America. And the Philippines was among the world’s first basketball-
playing nation. From the 1910s to the early 1930s, the Philippines dominated the Far
Eastern Games Basketball Tournament winning 9 out of 10 basketball championships.
BASIC RULES IN BASKETBALL
1. A team is composed of five players that includes two guards, two
forwards and one center.
2. The game is divided into four quarters, each with 10 minutes in
duration.
3. The game is officiated by 2 referees. A timer and a scorer assist the
referees.
4. Each quarter is started with a jump ball held at the center circle of the
court.
5. Corresponding points are scored as follows:
a. Two points – a shot made from anywhere inside the three-point arc.
b. Three points - a shot made from anywhere outside the three point arc.
c. One point – a shot made at the free throw line while the time is
stopped.
6. Each team is allowed one time-out per quarter from first to third, and two
time-outs during the fourth quarter.
7. The following violations are imposed to players who do the following acts
a. Travelling, taking more than three steps with the ball without passing,
dribbling or shooting
b. Stepping out of the end lines with the ball
c. Double dribbling, taking a second series of dribbles without handling the
ball to another player
d. Kicking the ball deliberately
e. Staying more than three seconds in the area under offensive basket
8. Personal fouls are imposed such as holding, tripping, pushing, charging,
and blocking.
9. A player who committed five personal fouls is declared out of the game.
10. If the score is tied after the regulation time, an overtime period of five
minutes is played. If the score is still tied after the first overtime period,
another five minutes will be played.
BASIC SKILLS IN BASKETBALL
1. Dribbling – is done by continuously
bouncing the ball on the floor with the
use of the hand. Dribbling is allowed
even when in a stationary position or
moving. If you stop dribbling, you must
either pass or shoot. You are not
allowed to dribble the ball again after
you have just stopped from a previous
dribble.
2. Shooting – in order to score a point, you need to shoot the ball into the
basket ring. To achieve shooting skills, you need constant practice. You
also have to consider your position in the court, your distance from the
basketball ring, your clones to your opponent, and the flight of the ball.
3. Passing – is the movement of the ball from one player to a receiver in
the same team. Proper coordination is needed to achieve a successful
pass.
Kinds of passes in basketball are:
a. Chest Pass – the most common pass done by players in which the ball is
held by both hands from the chest of the passer, who does a straight pass and
throws with a snap of the wrist to the chess of the receiver.
b. Bounce Pass – the ball is given to a teammate by bouncing the ball on the
floor a meter away from the receiver. It will be easier for the receiver to catch the
ball if the ball bounces at waist level.

c. Overhead Pass – the ball comes from the overhead of the passer to the chest
of the receiver.
d. Underhand Pass – this kind of pass is usually executed when a passer is
closely guarded.

e. Baseball Pass – the ball is thrown by the passer overhead, this kind of
pass is very difficult to control as it is a long pass that travels the length of
the court.
