Chapter 2: Platonic Solids

4

Platonic Solids is named after
Plato, not because he invented
them, but  because he keeps on
mentioning them in his book
“The Elements”.

5
Plato associated each of the four
elements with a regular solid.

Earth was associated with a hexahedron.

6
Plato associated each of the four
elements with a regular solid.

Air with the octahedron.

7
Plato associated each of the four
elements with a regular solid.

Water with the icosahedron.

8
Plato associated each of the four
elements with a regular solid.

Fire with the tetrahedron.

9
Plato associated each of the four
elements with a regular solid.

 Heaven was associated with dodecahedron.

Regular
Polyhedra

11

The regular polyhedra are the
best-known polyhedra that have
connected numerous disciplines
such as astronomy, philosophy and
art. They  are known as platonic
solids.

12
The five (5) platonic solids are;

 Tetrahedron
 Hexahedron (Cube)
 Octahedron
 Dodecahedron
 Icosahedron

Tetrahedron and Its Properties

A tetrahedron is a regular polyhedron

composed of 4 equally sized
 equilateral triangles. Tetrahedron is
also known as “Triangular pyramid”.

15
Characteristics of the Tetrahedron

Number of faces: 4
Number of vertices: 4
Number of edges: 6

16
Tetrahedron Formula

◍Surface
Area = Where e is the length of the edge.

17
Tetrahedron Formula Example

Calculate the surface area of a tetrahedron whose edge is 5cm

◍Solution:

Surface Area =
=
= 25
= 43.30
