Bada, John Paul
INTRODUCTION
Violence against women is defined as any
physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological abuse
or violence committed against women by intimate
partners or acquaintances, including current or
former spouses, cohabiting partners, boyfriends, or
dates. Regardless of how it is socially or legally
defined, women’s experiences of violent
victimization are dominated by victimization by
people they know.
VIOLENCE AGAINTS
WOMEN
Violence against women (VAW) appears as one of the country’s pervasive
social problems. According Philippine Statistics Authority, one in four Filipino
women age 15-49 has experienced physical, emotional or sexual violence by
their husband or partner. It is indeed alarming that despite efforts to address
the concern, VAW persists.
VAW is deemed to be closely linked with the unequal power relation
between women and men otherwise known as “gender based violence.”
Societal norms and traditions dictate people to think that men are the leaders,
pursuers, and providers, and take on the dominant roles in society while
women are the nurturers, men’s companions and supporters, and take on the
subordinate roles in society. This perception leads men to gain more power
over women. VAW becomes a form of men’s expression of control over women
to retain power.
Republic Act 9262
It is a law the seeks to address the prevalence of
violence against women and their children. VAW is “any
act or a series of acts committed by any person against a
woman who is his wife, former wife, or against a woman
with whom the person has or had a sexual or dating
relationship, or with whom he has a common child, or
against her child whether legitimate or illegitimate, with
or without the family abode, which result in or is likely to
result in physical, sexual, psychological harm or suffering,
or economic abuse including threats of such acts, battery,
assault, coercion, harassment or arbitrary deprivation of
liberty.”
VAW includes, but not limited to, the following acts:
Physical violence
The act that includes bodily or physical harm

Sexual violence
The act that is sexual in nature, committed against a woman or
her child

Psychological violence
The act or omission that causes or likely to cause mental or

physical, sexual, psychological,
economic, and other forms of abuse.
Purpose
The "Women's Desk" project (2008-2010) is a gender
mainstreaming experience in a challenging socio-cultural
context. It aims to be a space for consultation and
coordination between the various local services in the
Oriental Region in order to improve the services provided for
the women beneficiaries. It provides a range of services,
starting with comprehensive care for women in precarious
situations, listening to them to ascertain their problems and
needs, providing them with information and referring them to
either the relevant local services in case of legal, health,
sociocultural or educational problems, or to the appropriate
services for job seeking and socio-professional integration.
