Readings from the Acts of the
Apostles (Acts 8: 5-8.14-17)
When there was persecution against the church in Jerusalem, Philip went to a
city in Samaria and preached the Messiah to the people there. When the
crowd heard Philip's preaching and saw the signs he was doing, they all
accepted what he was preaching with all their hearts. For unclean spirits,
crying with a loud voice, were coming out of many who were possessed, and
many paralyzed and lame people were healed. So there was great joy in that
city. When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the land of Samaria had
received God's Word, they sent Peter and John there. When they arrived, the
two apostles prayed that the Samaritans might receive the Holy Spirit. For the
Holy Spirit has not yet come upon any of them, because they were only
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John laid hands on
the believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Gospel Reading from Yohanes
14:15-21
At the Last Supper, Jesus said to His disciples, “If you love me, you will keep my
commandments. I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, the Spirit
of truth, that He will be with you forever. The world cannot accept Him, because it
does not see Him and does not know Him. But you know him, because he is with you
and will live in you. I won't leave you as an orphan. I come back to you. Just a moment
longer, and the world will see me no more. But you see me because I live, and you will
live too. At that time you will know that I am in my Father, that you are in me, and I
am in you. He who has my commandments and obeys them, he is the one who loves
me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will
reveal myself to him. "
