Multistage Transistor Amplifier
 Need:
Single stage amplifier does not provide
required gain
 Definition:
 A transistor circuit consisting of more than
one stage of amplification is known as
multistage transistor amplifier

Multistage Transistor Amplifier
 Coupling devices.
a capacitor
Transformer
Purpose
To transfer a.c. output of one stage to the input of
the next stage.
To isolate the d.c. conditions of one stage from the
next stage.
Multistage Amplifier-I/APAhir 7

Types of multistage Amplifier
1)RC Coupled
2) Transformer Coupled
3)Direct Coupled

Gain of Multistage Amplifier

Vin An RL
A1 V1 A2 V2 A3 V3 VO

 Expression for gain of Multistage Amplifier

A1=V1/Vin
∴V1=A1*Vin---------------------(1)

A2=V2/V1
∴V2=A2*V1----------------------(2)
From equation (1)
∴ V2=A2*A1*Vin----------------(3)
A3=V3/V2
∴ V3=A3*V2---------------------(4)
From equation (2)
∴ V3=A3*A2*A1*Vin
∴VO=A3*A2*A1*----------*An*Vin
VO/Vin==A3*A2*A1*----------*An
Multistage Amplifier-I/APAhir 9
We can conclude
 Gain of multistage amplifier is
product of gains of individual
amplifiers.
 I/P resistance is the I/P resistance of

first stage
 O/P resistance is the O/P resistance

of last stage
Multistage Amplifier-I/APAhir 10
We can conclude

 Bandwidth of multistage amplifier is smaller than

single stage amplifier

Multistage Amplifier-I/APAhir 11
Example
 A three-stage amplifier has a first stage voltage gain of
100, second stage voltage gain of 200 and third stage
voltage gain of 400. Find the total voltage gain in db.

RC Coupled Transistor Amplifier
 Most popular
 Cheap
 Excellent audio fidelity over a wide range of

frequency.
 Voltage Amplification
 As the coupling from one stage to next is

achieved by a coupling capacitor followed by a

connection to a shunt resistor, therefore, such
amplifiers are called resistance - capacitance
coupled amplifiers.

Frequency response of RC Coupled
Transistor Amplifier

 < 50 Hz: Gain is small

 >20 KHz: Gain is small

 50 Hz to 20 KHz :Gain is
Uniform
50 Hz 20 KHz

Multistage Amplifier-I/APAhir 15
Advantages
Excellent frequency response.
The gain is constant over the audio

frequency range which is the region of

most importance for speech, music.
 Lower cost.
The circuit is very compact

Multistage Amplifier-I/APAhir 16
Disadvantages
 Low voltage and power gain.

 Tendency to become noisy with age

particularly in moist climates.

 Impedance matching is poor.

Multistage Amplifier-I/APAhir 17
Applications
 RF Communications.
 Optical Fiber Communications
 Public address systems as pre-amplifiers.
 Controllers.
 Radio or TV Receivers as small signal

amplifiers.
