What is a Venn Diagram?

Venn diagram was introduced in 1880 by John Venn. It is an

illustration of the relationships between and among sets of groups of
objects that share something in common. Usually, Venn diagrams are
used to depict set intersections.

The drawing at the right is

an example of a Venn Diagram
that shows the relationship
among three overlapping sets
A, B, and C. The intersection relation
is defined as the equivalent of the logic AND.

An element is a member of the intersection of two sets if and

only if that element is a member of both sets. Venn diagrams are
generally drawn within a large rectangle that denotes the Universe,
6
the set of all elements under consideration.

Congratulations!!! You have just learned
a way of solving problems by entering
the elements of a set into a circle or
circles in a step-by-step process to solve
problems using the method called Venn
Diagram.
