AERONAUTICAL

ENGINEERING
~Srusti Suryavanshi
What is Aeronautical Engineering?
 Aeronautical Engineering is a well-known branch of engineering that
attracts students with interest in airplanes and their mechanism.
 The primary job of an Aeronautical Engineer is to devise aircraft and
propulsion systems, but with time, the engineer is given many more
responsibilities to carry out.
 An engineering degree in Aeronautical Engineering helps one in
getting a job in the aviation industry, defense establishments, and
civil aviation department.
 The average salary of an aeronautical engineer is INR 6 lakhs or
more. With experience, the earning grows manifold.
How to get started?
To pursue a course in Aeronautical engineering, students must have
studied physics and mathematics in school(10+2). Courses in aeronautics
prepare candidates for jobs in the field of aerospace and aviation.

Skillset for Aeronautical Engineering Aspirants

Speed and accuracy – since aircraft have to be

Manual, technical and mechanical aptitude
serviced in a short time

Strong sense of responsibility Alertness and presence of mind

Must have leadership qualities but also be able

Normal color vision
to work in a team

Physical fitness and good height  Strong analytical ability

Eligibility Criteria
In India several technological universities including the IITs offer courses
in aeronautical engineering both at undergraduate and post-graduate
level.

 The basic eligibility criteria for BE / B.Tech program is 10+2 Science (Physics,
Chemistry and Mathematics) with a fairly high percentage of marks in the
aggregate.
 One must pass the qualifying exam i.e. IIT JEE for admission into Indian Institutes of
Technology (IITs) or the SRMJEE to apply to the aerospace engineering program they
have.
 For M.Tech program in aeronautical engineering one should have completed degree
in (BE/B.Tech) aeronautical engineering or any other equivalent branches of
engineering.
Career and Job Prospects

 Jobs are available in aircraft-manufacturing units.

 The defense industry and Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO)
happen to be two major employment providers in India.
 Aeronautical engineers often get employment in organizations such as
Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd., Defense Research and Development
Laboratories, National Aeronautical Lab, Aeronautical Development
Establishment, Civil Aviation Department and other places as well.
Salary Package
 The average start up salary in this field ranges from 1.5 lakh to 3.0 lakh
per annum. The salary depends on academic excellence and skill set of
individuals. The gross salary of a skilled and experienced aeronautical
engineer varies between Rs.40,000-1.25 lakh per month.
 The Increment or hike in salary is relative to the employer, current
position and one’s performance. Generally in government sector the
salary hike is not much. But, in a private sector you may be offered
better positions through which salary may be higher.
