Operations

on
Integers
Learning Objectives

1. Identify the four fundamental operations

on Integer;
2. Solve problems involving operations on
Integers; and
3. Demonstrates the rules in solving real life
situations.
Let’s
have some
fun!!!
Solve that Word!
Who was the first English
mathematician who first used the
modern symbol of equality in 1557?
-94 162 96 -98 -94 -15

-94 -98 143.5 162 -94 48 -98

Solve that Word!

-94 -98 143.5 162 -94 48 -98

A 25 + 31 B (-6) × 11
O 81 × 2 T (-78) + 63
B (-6) - (-102) C 100 ÷ (-5)
C (-287) / (-2) S 87 ÷ 3
D 88 + (-1) D 54 - 6
I 63 ÷ 4 E (-75) + (-23)
R (-33) - 61 K (-71)(-15)
Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

ADDITION of Int egers

To add integers with the same sign, add the

two w/o regard to the signs. Then affix the
common sign of the integers.

• The sum of two positive integers is the sum of

their absolute values with a positive sign(+).

Positive + Positive = Positive

10 + 10 = 20
Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

ADDITION of Int egers

• The sum of two negative integers is the sum of

their absolute values with negative sign(-).

Negative + Negative = Negative

(-10) + (-10) = -20

Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

ADDITION of Int egers

To add two integers with different signs, consider the distance

of each integer from zero. Subtract the shorter distance from
the longer distance. In the answer, use the sign of the number
farther from zero.

• The sum of two integers having opposite signs is the difference of

their absolute values with the sign of integer of greater absolute
value.

Positive + Negative = their difference

(-20) + 10 = -10
20 + (-10) = 10
Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

ADDITION of Int egers

Examples:

5+3= 8
20 + 17 = 37
(-3) + (-6) =
-9
(-42) + (-30) =
-72
13 + (-82) =
-69
Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

ADDITION of Int egers

REMEMBER!

If there are more than two addends in the problem the first
step to do is to combine addends with same signs and then
get the difference of their sums.

-14 + 22 + 8 + -16 = -14 + 16 + 22 + 8

= -30 + 30
=0
Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

S U BTRACTI O N o f I n t e g e r s

• Reverse operation of addition.

• In subtraction, we change the sign of the

integer which is to be subtracted
(subtrahend) and then add the first
integer (minuend)

If a-b = a + (-b)
a- (-b) = a + (+b)
Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

S U BTRACTI O N o f I n t e g e r s

Examples:

-62- (-135) = -62 + 135 = 73

29 – 86 = 29 + (-86) = -57
43 – (-64) = 43 + 64 = 107
-7 – 6 = -7 + (-6) = -13
4 – (-5) = 4 + (+5) =9

When two integers have the same sign, their product is

the product of their absolute values with positive sign (+).

Positive x Positive = Positive

20 x 10 = 200

Negative x Negative = Positive

(-20) x (-10) = 200

(-20) x 10 = -200

Examples:

(-10) x 8 = -80
(-5) x 7 = -35
(+6) x (+7) = (+42) or 42
(-12) x (-6) = (+72) or 72
(-3) x (-5) = (+15) or 15
Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

DIVISION of Integers

• Reverse of multiplication

The division of two integers having the same sign is the division
of their absolute value with a positive sign (+). If both the
integers have the same sign, then the quotient will be positive.

Positive ÷ Positive = Positive

20 ÷ 10 = 2

Negative ÷ Negative = Positive

(-20) ÷ (-10) = 200

Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

DIVISION of Integers

If both integers have different signs, the

quotient will be negative (-).

Positive ÷ Negative = Negative

20 ÷ (-10) = (-2)

Negative ÷ Positive = Negative

(-20) ÷ 10 = (-2)
Four Fundamental Operations on Integers

DIVISION of Integers

Examples:

(-10) ÷ 5 = -2
(-18) ÷ 3 = -6
(+12) ÷ (-3) = +4 or 4
(-24) ÷ (-12) = +12 or 12
(+9) ÷ (+3) = +3 or 3
Let’s
try?
Test yourself!
Find the value of n

1. (-84) – (-31) = n
2. (-76) + n = -165
3. 375 – (-187) = n
4. n + (-208) = 57
5. 45 x (-45) = n
Test yourself!
Find the value of n

6. (-15) x (-35) = n
7. 88 x 854 = n
8. (-20) ÷ n = 4
9. n ÷ (-8) = 15
10. 153 ÷ n= 17
Mathematics may not teach us
how to add love or minus hate.
But it gives us every reason to
hope that every problem has a
solution.
