Biomolecules

a molecule used term for molecules or

more commonly ions that are present in
organisms.
Carbohydrates are one of the main types of
nutrients. They are the most important source of
energy for your body. Your digestive system
changes carbohydrates into glucose (blood
sugar). Your body uses this sugar for energy for
your cells, tissues and organs. It stores any extra
sugar in your liver and muscles for when it is
needed.
3 sub units of carbohydrates

Monosaccharide
Disaccharide
polysaccharide
Monosaccharide
are an energy source; most of them provide
about 4 Calories (kilocalories) per gram, just
like other carbohydrates. Glucose is the main
fuel for the body cells. Fructose participates in
metabolism.

Disaccharide
also called double sugar, any substance that is
composed of two molecules of
simple sugars (monosaccharide's) linked to each other.
Disaccharides are crystalline water-soluble compounds.
(sucrose, maltose, lactose)
Structure of disaccharide

A glycosidic bond is
formed between the
hemiacetal or
hemiketal group of a
saccharide
Polysaccharides
are polymeric carbohydrate molecules
composed of long chains of monosaccharide units
bound together by glycosidic linkages. It yields a
large no. Of monosaccharide in hydrolysis.
(starch,glycogen, cellulose)
Starch- chemically consists of long chains of glucose
formed by plant during photosynthesis.
Cellulose – it forms the structures of some plants and
valuable in human diet fiber.
 Glycogen-is the stored form of glucose present in animals
including humans. Energy stored with the body , stored within
muscles and the liver and brain.
