Frey’s Teaching Philosophie

BIEN

Bienvenue!
Ma philosphie
• “Il est encore plus facile de juger de
l'esprit d'un homme par ses questions
que par ses réponses.”- Voltaire
– (“It is easier to judge the spirit of a
person by their questions than by their
answers.”)
• I want to promote the learning where
it is more important to seek to
discover, to think for oneself, than to
simply respond in textbook answers.
Ma philosophie
• I am not a teacher; only a fellow traveler of
whom you asked the way. I pointed ahead–
ahead of myself as well as of you.George
Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) British dramatist,
critic, writer.
• I am always learning, especially when it comes
to the language and culture of French speaking
countries. I want to model how to learn and
interact with French for students. I want to
model how rewarding it is to ask questions and
find all sorts of fascinating resources. I cannot
do that by pretending I know EVERYTHING or
that I am NEVER wrong. I do not know
everything- and you never can. Even those who
speak French as a first language make mistakes.
I view my job as modeling and giving my
students strategies to make French learning
Ma philosophie
• The object of teaching a child is to enable him to get along without a
teacher. Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) American author, editor and
printer.
• I want to equip my students with the opportunities to find joy and
the resources to pursue learning a second language outside of the
classroom. Learning happens when people have a meaningful
experience with what they are trying to understand. I want to help
students seek out those experiences.
• Examples of helpful resources I want to introduce them to:
– Mocha Café
– Dailymotion
– Canal plus
– French and francophone films
Ma philosophie
• Education is not the filling a bucket but the lighting of a fire.
William Butler Yeats (1865–1939) Irish poet, dramatist.
• It is my goal for students to be at the forefront of their
learning. I am not here to stand at the front of the classroom
and fill their minds- learning does not work that way. I am
here like a tour guide- I know about navigating learning a
second language and learning about other cultures, and I will
guide them and provide them with meaningful destinations. This is your

Ma philosophie
• He was so learned that he could name a
horse in nine languages; so ignorant that
he bought a cow to ride on. Benjamin
Franklin (1706-1790) American statesman,
author, scientist, inventor and philosopher.
• In this quote a man knows the language
code, but he does not understand the
people with whom he is interacting.
Learning French is not about just learning
an oral code. Language defines, and is
defined by the culture that uses it. You
cannot truly learn a second language
without learning the cultures that use it.
Without learning about the people, the
code is meaningless. It is my goal to help
students discover other cultures and
Ma philosophie
• The great aim of education is not knowledge, but
action. Herbert Spencer (1820–1903) English
philosopher, political theorist, and sociological theorist.
• The greatest part about language is that we can use it
to understand others, and it gives us the tools we need
to work with them. My goal is to help students find
ways to enrich and help their communities and work
with others using the skills they learn in the classroom.
