Understanding

the Typhoons
Mary Queen of Apostle
What is a Typhoon

• A tropical Cyclone or typhoon is a storm system

characterized by counter – clockwise rotating air mass
around center called eye.
How many typhoons enter the Philippines every
year.

• According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and

Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), about 20 tropical

cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility each year.

Winds in a typhoon move in a
certain direction; they go around a
central area called the eye.
The appearance of the clouds in a typhoons are in a spiral
arrangement; they are being blown by winds in a counter –
clock wise directions.
CATEGORY WIND SPEED DAMAGE

Heavy rains and strong winds can cause

A tropical cyclone
Tropical with maximum minor flooding and property damage.
Depression sustained winds of up to 61
kilometers per hour (kph)

Strong winds can damage or destroy

vehicles, buildings, bridges, trees, personal
Tropical Strom A tropical cyclone with
maximum wind speed of 62 property and other outside objects, turning
to 88 kph loose debris into deadly flying projectiles.
SEVERE
Heavy rainfall The thunderstorm activity in a tropical
TROPICAL A tropical cyclone with
STORM maximum wind speed cyclone produces intense rainfall, potentially resulting in
(STS) of 89 to 117 kph flooding, mudslides, and landslides

TYPHOON A tropical cyclone with Can generate winds of more than 75 miles per hour
maximum wind speed and cause major flooding through their intense rainfall
of 118 to 220 kph
and storm surges.

SUPER A tropical cyclone with Their effects range from structural damage to trees,
TYPHOON maximum wind speed watercraft, and buildings to both immediate and long-
exceeding 220 kph
term impacts on human life and livelihood. The Worst
DEATH
The term typhoon
is used only in the
northwestern part of
the Pacific Ocean.
In the northeastern
part of the Pacific
Ocean and in the
northern part of the
Atlantic ocean, the
equivalent term is
hurricane
The difference is the geographical
area where they occur.

it inside the PAR?
The formation of typhoon

Typhoons start off as

tropical
thunderstorms. The
strong winds pull in
moisture from the
oceans.
The formation of typhoon

The thunderstorms
convert the moisture into
heat.
The heat causes more air
to flow to the centre of the
storm causing evaporation.
The formation of typhoon

All the heat

and air flow
toward the eye
creating the
typhoon.

What conditions favor the formation of
typhoon?
• There are six requirements for the formation of a typhoon:

1. Sufficiently warm sea surface temperatures

2. Atmospheric instability (elevation of hot air)

3. High humidity ( A lot of water vapor in the atmosphere)
