Metals such as lead, lithium, chromium,
which are found in microcircuits and
batteries in laptops and phones, can cause
significant environmental damage. When
released into the environment, even in small
quantities, they poison the soil, groundwater
and air, and this poses a serious danger to
human health. For decades, equipment that
has been rotting at landfills has been
releasing a huge amount of such toxic
compounds into the atmosphere.
When is it necessary to dispose of computer
equipment?

It is recommended to dispose of
computer equipment if it is cheaper
to buy a new one than to repair an
old one, as well as if it is obsolete.
Defective digital equipment can be disposed of in the following
way:

1) Find specialized recycling companies that will take out and

disassemble your PC.

2) Hand over to metal collection points.

3) Use recycling programs at hardware stores.

4) Give the computer for spare parts.

Throwing a computer or laptop in a landfill is simply stupid.

A laptop rotting in a garbage dump will not benefit either the
former owner or the environment.
Computer parts and their hazard
class

o mercury lamps used in PCs, laptops, monitors are extremely

dangerous, therefore, they are classified as class I;

o boards and batteries that contain lead, cadmium or tin are

classified as hazard class II;

o transformers and wires - to class III;

o metal parts are practically safe, and they are assigned the V
degree of danger
Computer decay

Material Decomposition
Frame 10 years
Plastic panel For 600 years.
Radiator 10 years or more.
Motherboard, processor, other electronic Not subject to decomposition.
components
Wires and other insulating materials Not subject to decomposition. Vinyl
chloride is released on heating.
Recycling process

o The first step is always done manually. This

is the removal of all dangerous components.

o All large plastic parts are then removed. The

plastic is sorted according to type and
shredded so that it can be reused later.

o The parts remaining after disassembly are

sent to a large shredder-shredder, and all
further operations are automated.

o The remains of computers crushed into

granules are sorted.
Disposal of batteries

Batteries contain a large amount of toxic substances - acids, alkalis, arsenic,

lead, mercury and others. Specialized enterprises are engaged in their disposal.
These can be processing or disposal plants.
About 80% of the materials from these batteries are recyclable
The battery is recycled in several stages:

the battery is opened and the contents are removed from it;

wash out the electrolyte, which contains sodium salts;

separate the anode plates from the cathode plates; aluminum

and copper plates are sent for remelting;

The plastic body is crushed and re-melted, then it can be used

as an additive for road surfaces.
The problem of recycling old mobile phones in the EU, Japan
and the United States is closely and very seriously. In these
countries, there are a huge number of different bills
stimulating the collection and recycling of used mobile
phones.
