ISO 9000
• The ISO 9000 series of Quality Systems provides guidelines of
model quality assurance system for a manufacturing , service
industry on the principles of TQM.
• Adoption of ISO standards paves way of international acceptability.
• IS 14000 series is equivalent Indian guidelines of standards.
• ISO is the short form of International Organization for
Standardization located at Geneva, Switzerland. India is one of the
member.
• The quality control, quality assurance, quality management differ
and have conflicting meaning countries. So, need of international
standards for quality was experienced and ISO came into existence.
• There are six ISO standards. ISO 8402, ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO
9002, ISO 9003, and ISO 9004. Latter five are popularly known as

ISO 9000 v/s IS 14000
• ISO 8402 / IS 13999 deals with standardization of quality vocabulary
and covers definitions of various concepts connected with the quality
systems, quality policy and quality assurance.
• ISO 9000 / IS 14000 is the road map for the series providing guidelines
for selection and use of standards meant for quality management.
• ISO 9001 / IS 14001 deals with quality system model for Quality
Assurance in Design, Development, Production, Installation and
Servicing.
• ISO 9002 / IS 14002 deal with quality system model for Quality
Assurance in Production and Installation.
• ISO 9003 / IS 14003 deals with quality system model for final
inspection and testing.
• ISO 9004 / IS 14004 deals with quality management, quality system
elements, quality cost, safety and liability.

Subset concept of ISO 9000
• ISO 9001 is comprehensive and covers 20
elements spanning different areas of
organization as already discussed.
• ISO 9002 deals with 18 elements excluding
Design control and Servicing.
• As a result ISO 9002 is a subset of ISO 9001.
• ISO 9003 deals with 12 elements only.
• As a result ISO 9003 is a subset of ISO 9002
which in turn is subset of ISO 9002.
• ISO 9004 is more extensive and covers
additional elements over and above what is
covered in ISO 9001.

ISO Certification
• ISO 9000 is the only internationally accepted standard for quality
management system in the world.
• ISO 9000 quality system is applicable to all types industries,
organization, manufacturing units, service provider irrespective of
geographical location.
• ISO 9000 is a document oriented system.
• ISO 9000 allows complete freedom of selection and use of process,
operating procedures, and work instruction.
• ISO 9000 does not mandate any quality level, rejection percentage,
quality cost level or waste management.
• ISO 9000 series emphasis on well documented process to be followed
by an organization and it’s PSeffective implementation.

ISO Certification (2)
• ISO certification is third party on-site audit on company’s operations
against requirements of appropriate standard.
• Upon successful completion of audit company gets a registration
certificate that identifies company’s quality system is in compliance with
relevant ISO standards.
• International customers expect Indian companies to have ISO 9001, ISO
9002 or ISO 9003 certification.
• The accredited third party registrar conducts periodic surveillance audit
to assure that quality systems are being maintained.
• Frequency of audit depends upon nature of industry and certification.
• ISO 9000 is a certification of process not product.
