COMMUNICATION
~ SANJEET KUMAR
S TO RYT E L L I NG IN COMMUN I CATI O N
Storytelling is a two-way interaction, written or oral, between someone telling a story and
one or more listeners. It is one of the most powerful means that leaders have to
influence, teach, and inspire.
It can bring together individuals of different cultures, as a story can highlight fundamental
aspects of being human. It can act as a powerful tool in mastering communication in both
a professional and a personal setting.

4 P’S OF STORYTELLING
• Neural coupling: When listening to, reading, or watching a story, the part of
the brain activates that allows us to turn the story into our own experience.
HUMAN BRAIN
LOVES • Dopamine: When our brains encounter an emotionally charged event such as
a story it releases dopamine which makes it much easier for us to remember it.
STORYTELLING
• Cortex activity: When we’re engaged in a story it activates more parts of the
brain than when our brains are processing facts alone. An activated brain
means a more engaged heart.
• Storytelling quiets your audience’s inner critic: The problem with sticking to
the facts in your presentations is that while you’re sharing your data your
audience is likely arguing with you in their heads.
Allow audience
to experience information as
experiences are deeply tied to
emotion.

Stories should revolve around the familiar — typical industries of the day
like fishing, farming or everyday events like weddings, commerce and
elements of nature to relate.
Know what you want your story to be about. Ask yourself , “What do I
want my audience to learn from my story?

Each business needs to use storytelling to answer the simple question of "why
should people care?", whether they are targeting customers, potential
employees or stakeholders.
Storytelling conveys purpose and businesses with purpose are noticed and win
the loyalty of consumers. So, it's not enough to have a product or service that
solves a problem - your company needs to stand out.
You are essentially giving your employees a greater sense of purpose and
meaning by making them part of the company's wider story. Further develop
this by allowing your employees to share their own stories.
Stories provide meaning, create context and evoke a sense
of purpose. Most humans are more receptive to stories
FINAL than compared to facts or data as stories help us relate,
THOUGHTS empathies and remember. Therefore, more businesses are
increasingly recognizing the importance of storytelling.
