PURCHASING v RENTING EQUIPMENT
• It is preferable but not necessary that students at have their own equipment.
• Purchasing can be more affordable than renting in the long run – you can always sell it when
you outgrow it. Also, it will make it easier to run local on-snow ski practices if the majority of
team members have equipment. Coach Maria has some equipment, but may not have your
size, and does not have enough for everyone. It is possible that we could split the team in two
and rotate the equipment, assuming we have all the right sizes.

WHERE TO BUY:
1. Hardwood Ski and Bike – they are a dedicated xc ski resort and will know exactly what you
need.
2. MEC
3. Play It Again Sports
4. Kijiji or Marketplace

For MEC, Play It Again, Kijiji or Marketplace, it’s really important that you understand exactly
what you need…
PURCHASING EQUIPMENT - BOOTS
Skate, skiathlon, or combi boots are required (high ankle with strap)
DO NOT purchase classic or touring boots.

YES!! NO!!

No label, or label says classic or touring.

Lower ankle, no ankle strap
PURCHASING EQUIPMENT - SKIS
Only skate or combi skis are suitable.
Do NOT purchase classic, touring,
or back-country skis.

The shorter the ski, the easier it is for beginners to control.

Minimum length 140 cm or 10 cm shorter than the player’s height (OFSAA
Nordic Playing Regulations 6b(i)).
As a guideline, Coach Maria is 165 cm tall and her skis are 177 cm.
Weight is more important that length. Check if the skis indicate a weight
range.
PURCHASING EQUIPMENT - BINDINGS
• If you buy used, bindings usually come with the skis.
• It’s super important that the boots and bindings are compatible.
SNS Profil and Pilot boots have one big groove down the centre NNN or SNS Prolink have two
that corresponds with one big ridge on the binding. narrow grooves in the boot that
correspond with two ridges on the
SNS Profil boots can only work SNS Pilot boots can work with SNS Pilot binding. They have one pin.
with SNS Profil bindings. There or Profil bindings. Note the extra clip on
is only one pin on the boot. the binding for the second pin on the
boot.
The 2nd pin
on the boot
fits in the
groove on
the profil
binding.
(see 2nd
arrow.)
PURCHASING EQUIPMENT - poles
• Poles should be as high as your lips when you are standing on the
ground, or about 12.5 cm shorter than you are tall.
• If you have a choice of straps, choose ones that close over your hand
with Velcro. Cork handles are warmer.
• If you have a choice of baskets, smaller is better.
Label skis, boots, poles, bag with your name to prevent EQUIPMEN
mixing them up with other skiers’ equipment.

Skis: Wax them at every possible opportunity.

T CARE
Protect the bases by holding them together with
ski ties. Don’t lose your ties. Keep them in your pocket
or bag when skiing.

Poles: Protect them with pipe wrap during travel.

Boots: take out the insoles when you get home so

they can air out and not smell.

Bag: Keep your skis & poles in a ski sleeve for easy
transport and to protect them in transit.

Jersey: Wash only when necessary, inside-out by hand

(machine hand-wash cycle is fine), hang to dry
