INTRODUCTION
ADVERBS
Basically, most adverbs tell you how, where or when some
thing is done. In other words, they describe the manner, place
or time of an action.

Adverb are words used to describe adjectives, adverbs, verbs,


and sentence.
Commonly adverbs are formed from adjectives.
Some are below :

Kind Kindly
Happy Happily
Wonderful Wonderfully
Loud Loudly
Sad Sadly
Beautiful Beautifully
Sweet Sweetly
Many adverbs end with –ly.
You make these adverbs by adding -ly to adjective.

Note :
Some words that end in –ly are not adverbs.
Example : Some adjectives end in –ly too.
1. She sings sweetly. For example :
2. He speaks quite clearly. 1. Sam was feeling very lonely.
3. She shouts loudly. 2. She was wearing a lovely dress.
3. It was a very lively party.
4. She smiled cheerfully.
5. The traffic was moving slowly.
6. She writes neatly.
7. We waited patienly to see the doctor.
KIND OF ADVERBS
Manner It describes in which manner an action is done.

Place It describes where an action is done.

Time It describes when an action is done.

Frequency It shows how many times an action is done.

Purpose/Reason It describes the purpose or reason for the action.

Quantity/Degree It shows how much or in what degree or to
what extent
Affirmation/Negation Which says yes if it is yes,
And no if it is no
ADVERBS OF PLACE
Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question “where?”.
They are called adverbs of place.

Example :
• The boys are playing upstairs.
• The dog is in the garden.
• We’re going to New York City on our school trip.
• It’s very sunny but cold outside.
• I’ve lived here for about two years.
• English and German are closely related.
• His children go everywhere with him.
ADVERBS OF MANNER
Some adverbs and adverb phrases describe the way people do things.
They are called adverbs of manner.

Example :
• The girls answered all the questions correctly.
• He was driving carelessly.
• The plane landed safely.
• Ramu plays guitar skillfully.
• They watched carefully.
• The flower was beautifully made up.
• The team played wonderfully.
ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY
Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question “how often an
action is done?”
They are called adverbs of frequency.

Example :
• The children always go to school on the bus.
• I’ll never made that mistake again.
• I clean my bedroom every day.
• Dad polishes hi shoes twice a week.
ADVERBS OF TIME
Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question “when?”
They are called adverbs of time.

Example :
• The train has already left.
• We moved into our new house last week.
• Our favorite TV program starts at 6 ‘o clock.
• I’m going to my new school tomorrow.
• We shall now begin to work.
• He called here a few minute ago.
• I have spoken to him yesterday.
• He come here daily.
ADVERBS OF QUANTITY OR DEGREE
It shows how much or in what degree or to what extent.

Example :
• He was too careless.
• The sea is very stormy.
• I am rather busy.
• I am fully prepared.
• These mangos are almost ripe.
ADVERBS OF REASON/PURPOSE
The adverb which tells about a reason or purpose about something
is called adverb of reason/purpose.

Example :
• Since it’s raining so heavily, I can’t go out.
• Lissa doesn’t go to school because she is sick.
• He was unable to play in the final games as he had hurt his
ankle.
• We all go for a picnic just for enjoyment.
ADVERBS OF AFFIRMATION AND NEGATION
Adverb of affirmation is an adverb that is used to express affirmation,
emphasis, rejection or approval for an answer
Which says yes if it is yes, and no if it is no.

Example :
• I don’t know.
• Surely you are mistaken.
• He certainly went.
• Certainly what he says is the truth.
• Yes, I can speak English fluently.
• He exactly knows the right thing to do.
• I would obviously feel awesome about your comment.
There also have two type of adverb that can distinguished.

1. INTERROGATIVE ADVERB
Besides adverb is an explanatory word of a verb, adverb can also be in the form
question words, such as how, when, why and where.
Example :
• Why are you here?
• When is it going to stop?
• Where did the money come from?
• How long do we have to participate in this training?

2. CONJUNCTIVE ADVERB
This adverb function as a transition word combining and linking independent clauses.
This adverb includes words such as accordingly, also, certainly, therefore, finally,
alternatively , moreover, and so on.
Example :
• She certainly has what it takes to become an actress.
• I can’t leave the house today, therefore I delegate the meeting to the vice president.
