Atomic physics

Atomic physics is the field of
physics that studies atoms as an
isolated system of electrons and an
atomic nucleus. It is primarily
concerned with the arrangement of
electrons around the nucleus and
the processes by which these
arrangements change. This
comprises ions and neutral atoms.

Bohr model of the
hydrogen atom.
Another model of atom

12/11/2021 6
The model of the hydrogen atom
announced in 1913 by physicist
Niels Bohr consists of a positively
charged nucleus around which an
electron orbits in an elliptical orbit.
This model is called the planetary
model, because the electron orbits
the nucleus in a way that
resembles the motion of a planet
around the Sun.

The quantum model
The currently valid quantum
model of the atom was proposed in
1925 by physicist Erwin
Schrodinger.  This model assumes
that the laws of classical physics
do not apply in the micro-world
and that all objects in this world
have a dual nature - both wave and
corpuscular.

The external photoelectric
phenomenon

12/11/2021 10
The external photoelectric
phenomenon is based on the
emission of electrons from the
surface of a solid under the
influence of external radiation.
It has features that cannot be
explained on the basis of the
classical wave theory of light.

12/11/2021 11
Einstein succeeded in explaining
these properties of the
photoelectric phenomenon with
the revolutionary new assumption
that the energy of a light beam
propagates through space as finite
portions (quanta) of energy called
photons.
(Corpuscular-wave duality).

Quantum theory of light

12/11/2021 13
Quantum optics is a branch of
physics that deals with phenomena
related to light that cannot be
explained on the basis of wave
theory (e.g. the photoelectric
phenomenon). Quantum optics
treats light as a process of
propagation of certain portions of
energy (quanta) called photons,
which indicates the "granularity" of
the structure of light.

12/11/2021 14
Quantum optics does not negate
the laws of wave optics, since light
is both a stream of particles and an
electromagnetic wave. Certain
phenomena such as diffraction and
interference, for example, can only
be explained on the basis of wave
optics. Photoelectric phenomena,
on the other hand, can only be
explained on the assumption that
light has a particle nature. This
duality of the nature of light is
called corpuscular-wave dualism.

Matter wave

12/11/2021 16
Based on the corpuscular-wave

dualism of light, de Broglie put

forward the hypothesis that the same is

true of all matter. Waves associated

with real objects are called matter

waves. An electron forms a standing

wave in orbit. This hypothesis was

awarded the Nobel Prize in 1929.
