Literature

Literature
• from Latin literatura/litteratura "learning, a writing,
grammar," originally "writing formed with letters”

• from litera/littera "alphabetic letter" also "an epistle, writing,


document; literature, great books; science, learning”

• "literary productions as a whole, body of writings from a


period or people" 
Literary texts are constructed in
effect as objects of beauty, sources
of pleasure and as conveyors of
messages and information.

Understanding/Interpreting Literary
Texts
• Look for the “meat”.
• Get to know the author.
• Examine the origin (human history, language, and
culture, including art, music, philosophy, religion,
science, politics, etc.) of the text.
• Look for symbols.
• Observe similarities and differences between groups
of images, words, and ideas in a text.
Philippine Literature
Philippine literature withstood time and
periods and has evolved through
generations.  For every period that passed,
different genres appeared, and these literary
works rooted from all regions reflecting their
culture, society and lifestyle.

The three periods mentioned are the core
of our history and literature. History has a
very important role in literature as literature
not only reflects facts with aesthetic
language but more importantly, it displays
the ideas and feelings of the people living at
that time.
