PRESENT TENSE
1. The present tense has three forms to show present actions or conditions. They
are the:
a. Ordinary form- makes use of the –s form and the base form of the verb.
Examples:
Tonette studies her lesson diligently.
The volleyball players practice regularly.
b. Present progressive- denotes an action that is going on right now. It makes use
of is/are plus the –ing form of the verb.
Examples:
She is explaining the lesson to her classmates.
They are conducting a survey in those depressed areas.
PRESENT TENSE

c. Emphatic Form- makes use of do and does plus the plain form of the verb in
statements and questions.
Examples:
They do bring packed lunch to school everyday.
Do they bring packed lunch to school everyday?
She does not bring packed lunch to school every day.
Does she bring packed lunch to school everyday?
PRESENT TENSE
II. The present tense is used to indicate:
a. Present action
Example: Martha cooks our meals for the week.
b. Present condition
Example: They are interviewing the new director.
c. Regularly occurring action
Example: They always visit our place every weekend.
d. Regularly occurring condition
Example: This town is flooded during the rainy season.
e. Constant action
Example: Human beings breathe through her nose.
PRESENT TENSE
II. The present tense is used to indicate:
f. Constant condition
Example: Filipinos are known to be hospitable.
g. Historical events
Example: The tearing of cedulas during the Cry of Pugadlawin symbolizes
the determination of the Filipinos to take arms against Spanish colonizers.
h. Critical present tense- indefinite time used to discuss deceased authors and
their literary achievements.
Example: Nick Joaquin’s works present the diverse heritage of the Filipino
people.
PRESENT PERFECT TENSE
This tense always expresses indefinite time. It is used to show actions or
conditions from the past and continuing to the present. (has/have plus past participle
of the main verb)
The present perfect tense is used to indicate:
a. Completed action (indefinite time)
Example: She has been promoted to a higher position.
b. Completed condition (indefinite time)
Example: I have seen this place before.
c. Action continuing to the present
Example: She has skipped diet since Monday because she became very sickly.
d. Condition continuing to the present
Example: I have felt sleepy the whole day.
ACTIVITY
Instructions: Identify whether each sentence indicates present tense or present
perfect tense. Write PT for present tense and PPT for present perfect tense.
1. The world of teenagers revolves around mobile phones, Internet, music,
movies, television, and video games.
2. Most teenagers prefer watching television or playing video games than
reading books.
3. They have spent time watching computer games that take them to world of
make-believe.
4. Nowadays, girls who are too conscious of their weight have tried all kinds of
diet that sometimes lead to anorexia and bulimia.
5. Young people have often chosen coffee shops and restaurants as their venues
for doing group assignment.
ACTIVITY
Instructions: Identify whether each sentence indicates present tense or present
perfect tense. Write PT for present tense and PPT for present perfect tense.
6. They have found mobile phones indispensable and cannot imagine life without
them.
7. Most teenagers do consider text messaging the easiest way to communicate,
and an important feature of their social life.
8. Teenagers have used mobile phones for playing games, listening to music, and
even for watching movies.
9. Most teenagers have considered the use of technology more positively.
10. Technology is making their lives easier and helping them to be closer to their
friends and families.
