Digital Video Concepts:
Frames and Frame Rates
2 5
FRAME
◉ A frame is basically a time-referenced digital image, one that
is contained in a collection of slightly different digital images,
making it into a digital video asset that creates the illusion of
motion by playing these image frames in rapid succession.
◉ Digital video frames also contain pixels , for each image
frame, which means that the digital video asset also has
resolution as well as an aspect ratio , and a color depth .
◉ All the frames in a digital video use the same resolution,
aspect ratio, and color depth. Most digital video assets will
use a 24-bit color depth.

6
FRAME RATES
◉ The number of frames per second is commonly referred to as
FPS , and is also commonly referred to as the “frame rate” in
the digital video and film production industries.
◉ Common frame rates include
◉ 60 FPS for i3D Console Games,
◉ 30 FPS for Digital Videos,
◉ 24 FPS for Feature Films, and
◉ 20 FPS for new media.

7
FRAME RATE
COMPUTATION
◉ To find out how long each frame is displayed, based on a
Frames Per Second (FPS) value, divide the number 1 by the
FPS.
◉ Thus, 20 FPS frames display for .05 of a second, 30 FPS
frames display for .033 of a second, 24 FPS frames display
for .04167 of a second, and 60 FPS for frames for .0167 of a
second and so forth.

8
Digital Video Mathematics :
Doing the Multiplication
◉ So with a VGA, or SD Video, 640 by 480 resolution with a
24-bit color depth, you would have [(640x480)x3]=921,600
for just one frame of video.
◉ At 30 FPS this would be 921,600x30=27,648,000 bytes of
data.
◉ Divide this by 1024, and you have 27,000KB data, or 27MB
of raw data (or system memory) for one second of video.

9
Digital Video Resolutions: Industry
Standards
◉ Before HDTV (High Definition Television) came along,
video was called “SD” or Standard Definition, and used a
standard vertical resolution of 480 pixels.
◉ The original aspect ratio for SD was 4:3 (640 BY 480).
◉ More recently, a wide screen aspect ratio was added, making
SD video 720 by 480 resolution.
◉ HD resolution video comes in two different resolutions: 1280
by 720, called “Pseudo HD,” and 1920 by 1080, which the
video industry calls “True HD.”

14
Interface Discussed
◉ Media Library: This is where you will find all your media
including video clips, photos, and music. It also houses
transitions, effects, and a variety of other assets that you can
use in your projects.
◉ Preview Window: The Preview Window shows the video in
the Timeline. The position of the playhead is shown in the
time code in the lower right corner. You can enter a new time
code to jump to a specific point in the video. Below the time
code you'll find the snapshot button, which can save a full
resolution still frame and automatically add it to the Media
Library as an image

15
Interface Discussed
◉ Toolbar: The Toolbar provides easy access to many editing
commands. You can zoom in and out on the Timeline and
access a variety of tools like "cut" and "speed". Timeline:
◉ The Timeline is where you assemble the media and effects
for your video project.

16
Project Setup
◉ For every project you create, Filmora9 creates a project file
(.wfp). This file contains the settings you select for each
sequence in the project, as well as editing decisions, effects,
and music used in the project.
Launch Filmora9 and
choose New Project.

You can customize the

resolution, aspect ratio,
and frame rate of the
project by going to
File >Project Settings.

17
PROJECT SETTINGS

The default aspect ratio is 16:9, but you

can change it to 1:1 or 9:16 if you want to
make videos for Instagram or other social
media.

18
Save a Project
Click File > Save Project or Save
Project As, or use the hotkey
Ctrl+S.

Your project will be saved as a file

with the extension .wfp. These
files can only be recognized by
Filmora9.

19
Open a Project
◉ Open a project from the Project
Library When you launch Filmora9,
your most recent projects will be
shown in the Project Library.
◉ Select the target project to reload
the .wfp project file. If your project
isn't shown in the Project Library,
click Open Project to locate it.

20
Open an existing project when editing
Besides opening projects at
the beginning, you can also
open an existing project
when editing.
Click File and you can
choose Open Project
(ctrl+O) or Open Recent
to locate the .wfp file.

21
Move a project to another computer (archive
project file)
Click File > Archive Project or
use the hotkey Shift+Ctrl+A.
The project file and the source
files will be archived together in
the *.wfp format so they can be
easily moved to another
computer or storage device.
To open the .wfp file you just
need to double click on it.

22
Relocate missing media files
Click the magnifying glass icon to
relocate the missing files and
then press OK to reopen the
original project.

If the files have been

permanently deleted, you can
choose other files as
replacements.
