Assistive Tech: Book Creator
“It’s 2011 and Dan Amos and his wife, children’s author Ally Kennen are
concerned. Their 4-year-old son (later diagnosed as dyslexic) is making
slow progress with the school reading scheme. After many frustrating
evenings it struck them – wouldn’t it be better if they could make their
own books about the very things he loves? Books about Star Wars, books
about pets, books about family. At the same time, an iPad enters the
household and they wonder how do we get our kids as engaged with
reading as they are with the iPad?”

Book Creator features text-to-speech, and voice recording technology.

Innovative Tech: Flocabulary
“This program provides another way of helping kids remember their
vocabulary. It's been proven that music can be used as a strategy in
learning and retaining information. One interesting thing about this
program is it can reach every grade level because music is universal. It
can be hard for some students to focus and retain the knowledge needed
for testing. This program keeps students engaged and motivates them to
do more. I can see using this in a reading curriculum because when
children begin to read they are faced with so many new words in their
vocabulary. Understanding what the words mean will help them in their
studies.”

Innovative Tech: Teacher Tube
“This is an incredible resource for all teachers and students. It can be
used by teachers to supplement lessons that are focused on subjects that
they may not be experts in. They can also be utitlized by students when
they are learning a new subject. By having another person explain a
concept, they may be able to understand it differently than when the
teacher initially explained it. Videos are especially helpful for students
who need to replay information more than once to understand it.”

Innovative Tech: Epic!
“Epic fits within a K-5 curriculum seamlessly. If you've ever seen Netflix,
Epic is to children's books as Netflix is to TV. Their diverse, expansive
library has options for readers of any skill level and can accommodate a
wide range of interests. The Epic program allows young readers to
explore books on a familiar yet engaging platform. Epic allows students
to read e-books on their tablets or computers, check unfamiliar words, or
have the book read aloud. Further, educator access allows unparalleled
insight into student progress. On Epic, educators can monitor the
progress and time a student spends reading a particular book, creating
new, innovative insights that allow teachers to intervene more effectively.
Cost? Free! Epic is a program that enhances independent reading time.”

Innovative Tech: GoGuardian
“Go Guardian is a must-have if computers play a significant role in your
classroom. GoGuardian reports what students are doing on their computers and
allows you to view their computer screens in real-time. Further, GoGuardian
allows you to put web filters in place so that your students are not visiting
dangerous, inappropriate, or distracting sites on school-issued computers.
Further, GoGuardian allows educators to ensure students stay on task by
allowing teachers to restrict browsing so that students are unable to go off task.
Educators are also able to control a student's web browser through go-guardian
so they can close unnecessary tabs and/or bring off-task students into meetings.
Go Guardian allows for teachers to have just as much control through
technology as they do in their classroom, creating a better experience for both
$15 per computer educators and students.”

Innovative Tech: WordWall
“I can see myself using this website at any grade level. This is a great tool to
help produce my own worksheets in a fun way. I would be able to create
crossword puzzles with vocab words, create my own labeled diagrams to
identify certain parts of the world, and create my own quizzes. It works great as
I can choose to print out the activity or create it for the student to complete it
online. This would also be great to use as a lesson plan and interact with the
class as a whole. I would be able to create a game about a subject and allow the
class participation to help answer the questions. This would allow to give the
students participation points as well.”

Innovative Tech: Kami
“There are many ways kami can be integrated into the K-12 Curriculum. For
example, teachers in elementary school can use this program to edit out mistakes
that their students made on their assignments. If a student always makes mixes up
his or her d's and b's, the teacher can directly comment and highlight their
assignment and bring it up to the student. The interactive software makes it easy to
highlight and engage students, which is key for elementary school. Middle school
teachers can also use this program in their classrooms. English teachers can
annotate the PDFs of books they read in class. This also can edit essays, and
highlight common mistakes. History teachers might analyze historical documents
and can edit the file using kami. Teachers in high school can make use of the same
features. Through its interactive software and features, teachers can use this
$99 per year program to increase engagement between themselves and their students.”

Innovative Tech: Loom
“Loom can fit into the K-12 curriculum by if there is not enough time in
class for every student to present, Loom can be used. The student can
record their screen as well as their voice so they can be able to explain
each slide. It is also best for if a class cannot be taught live, the teacher
can record the lesson of the day so every kid can view it on their own
time. This is great for both students and teachers alike without having to
spend any money except if you want more features.”

Innovative Tech: My Shakespeare
“Anyone who's ever read Shakespeare knows it is dense. The language of
Shakespeare isn't like what we use today and reading it can be a challenge for
even the most proficient readers. My Shakespeare takes the classic works of
Shakespeare and supplements them in ways that appeal to modern students. My
Shakespeare helps guide students through the plays by providing them with
historical context and helping to identify unfamiliar words and phrases.
Additionally, the platform has released videos that show actors acting out
specific portions of the play, delivering differentiated instruction that appeals to
visual learners. This program is an absolute must-have for any educator who is
teaching Shakespeare because it helps make the classic storytelling of
Free Shakespeare accessible to students today. ”

Innovative Tech: Edpuzzle
“There are endless opportunities to use Edpuzzle in K-12 curriculum.
With the variety of videos available and the opportunity to create their
own, teachers are only limited by their own imaginations. Edpuzzle is a
powerful tool to deliver content in a fun and engaging way. Having the
video pause and ask questions will allow students to better wrap their
minds around new concepts.”
