What is Lateral Thinking?

The abilitiy to think creatively

For concepts and perceptions
Solving problems through an indirect and
creative approach

The term founded in 1967 by Edward De Bono
 HOW TO USE IT?
1) Recognize the dominant ideas that polarize the perception of a problem.
2) Search for different ways of looking at things.
3) Relax rigid control of thinking.
4) Use chance to encourage other ideas.
5) Learn the 7 Techniques :-
Alternatives : Look for different ways to sove problems
Focus : Train your brain to think more clearly
Challenge : Think in nontraditional ways
Random Entry : Be open to different lines of thought
Provocation : Turn a provocation situation into something useful
Harvesting : Choose the best of your new ideas
Treatment of ideas : Alter ideas to fit different scenarios
 EXAMPLE
Example 1 :
You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass
by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus.
1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die
2. An old friend who once saved your life
3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.
Knowing that there can only be one passenger in your car, whom would you
choose?
Answer : The old lady. After helping the old lady into the car, you can give your
keys to your friend, and wait with your perfect partner for the bus.
 EXAMPLE
Example 2 :
A man is wearing black. Black shoes, socks, trousers, lumper, gloves and
balaclava. He is walking down a black street with all the street lamps off. A black
car is coming towards him with its light off but somehow manages to stop in time.
How did the driver see the man?

Answer : The black car use GPS to track the exact location of the man that has
been set up using phone. Without lights, it still tells the driver to stop when the
driver arrives the location.
