Electronic Communication
Electronic communication can be defined as, the communication which uses electronic
media to disseminate the information or message using technologies such as computers,
world wide web tools, facsimile (fax), short message service (SMS), teleconferencing,
video conferencing, electronic mail. It is enhanced through the sharing of data like images,
graphics, sound, pictures, maps, software (elprocus.com) .
Types of Electronic
Communication
The Internet has facilitated new ways to communicate using myriad tools for electronic communication. Nowadays
,organizations interact differently with their various stakeholders- board members, employees, customers and suppliers-
depending on the nature of the message, the goals, and the strengths of the available tools, such as telephone, e-mail, fax,
voice mail and text messages. One of the significant advantages of electronic communication is that it allows you
combine numerous types of media- text, graphics, sound and video- into a single message (Campbell & Bogle-Graham,
2018).
An information system on the internet which allows documents to be connected to other documents by
hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another.
Facsimile (fax)
A document sent over a telephone line or via an Internet fax service. a system of transmitting and
reproducing graphic matter (such as printing or still pictures) by means of signals sent over telephone
lines.
Teleconferencing
A teleconference or teleseminar is the live exchange and mass articulation of information among
groups of individuals and machines remote from one another but linked by a telecommunications
system.
Videoconferencing
A meeting, facilitated, by a set of interactive telecommunication technologies, which allows two or
more locations to simultaneously interact via two-way video and audio transmissions. Video
conferencing is live, provides visual connection and facilitated by internet connections.
Electronic Mail
Electronic mail ( E-Mail) is a popular methodology that facilitates digital messages transmitted
electronically by technological devices such as computers ,phones and tablets to name a few. It can
facilitate several recipients and transmit document files electronically.
Selection of Communication Media
In selecting which communication media to use to deliver a message , the following factors must be
considered.
Degree of Urgency
Genre
• What is the format of the material to be presented , i.e. is the information in an oral format, in an audible
format such as a recording, in a written format, or in a visual format including graphics?
Selection of Communication Media Cont’d
Level of confidentiality
Location/time zone
Effectiveness
• Will the selected method allow for the transmission to be done within the time (urgency)
Advantages of Electronic Communication
• Speedy transmission: It requires only a few seconds to communicate through electronic media
because it supports quick transmission.
• Wide coverage: World has become a global village and communication around the globe requires a
second only.
• Low cost: Electronic communication saves time and money. For example, Text SMS is cheaper than
the traditional letter.
• Legal status: Data or information, if faxed, may be distorted and will cause zero value in the eye of
law.
• Undelivered data: Data may not be retrieved due to system error or fault with the technology. Hence
required service will be delayed
• Dependency: Technology is changing every day and therefore poor countries face the problem as they
cannot afford the new or advanced technology. Therefore poor countries need to be dependent towards
developed countries for sharing global network.
