linens.
Learning Objective: Drafts pattern for household
linens.
But before we proceed let's have a review.

Sewing Tools and Equipment
Sewing equipment and different tools are used i
n garment construction. The skillful use of different s
ewing equipment will help take body measurement a
nd drafting pattern with accuracy and speed.
Measuring Tools

Tape Measure - a flexible measuring device used in t


aking body measurements.

Meter Stick - it is made of smooth shellacked hardw


ood or metal. It is used for marking straight long lines
.
French Curve - this is used to shape the depth of the
neckhole and armhole of pattern.

Ruler - is a measuring tool used to measure and draft


lines on a fabric or pattern.
. Cutting Tools
- are instruments that serve well if properly main
tained. Sharp cutting tools make clean cuts and well
defined notches and they do not damage fabric.

Scissors - have both handle of the same size.


Shears - have one handle large than the other.

Seam Paper - is a cutting tool used to open seams as


well as other detailed work.
Marking tools - are essential to sewing. On most sewi
ng patterns, you'll find symbols that indicate
what to do with the fabric, and it's important to trans
fer those markings to your actual fabric.
These are:

Tracing Wheel - it is used with a dressmaker's carbon


to transfer pattern marking to the wrong side of the f
abric.
Tailor's chalk - this chalk is used for transferring patte
rn marking to the fabric.

Dressmaker pencil - used to make fine line on fabric.


Liquid Marking Pin - itis used for marking.

Then we have Sewing Tools and Accesories

Sewing Machine - it is a machine used to sew fabric an


d materials together with thread.
Needles - is used that has one sharp end and a hole a
t the other end to make the thread pass through.

And now let's proceed to our lesson for today.


Drafting Pattern for household Linens
It includes:
- steps in cutting fabric for household linens
- healthful and safety practices in sewing
- steps in sewing household linens ( pillow case)

Sews household linens using appropriate tools and p


attern drafting is the process of creating a pattern by
taking measurements from a person,
form , or model in order to create a foundation which
is a pattern used to produce through a series of stage
s, a graded paper pattern for sewing. Drafting pattern
is the most essential part in sewing before we procee
d to our prospect project or your choosen household
linen. This is then transferred on the cloth to be cut.
And it minimize the changes of any fault during cuttin
g on the fabric.

Steps in Cutting the Fabric for Household Linens:
1. Fold the cloth on it's lengthwise grain with the wro
ng side out.

2.Lay and pin the pattern on the cloth.


3. Mark all stitching and folding lines.

4. Mark all allowances.


5. Cut the cloth.

6. Transfer all the marks to the other side of the cloth


.
Health and Safety Practices in Sewing
Before starting to sew on the machine, it is important to remember t
he sewing practices and safety habits.

1. Light should come from the left shoulder. Do not sew when the ligh
t is very bright or very dim.
2. Sit erect on the chair directly in front of the machine.
3. Check if the machine in threaded correctly before you start to stuc
h.
4. Use you feet when threading.
5. Use scissors for cutting the thread. Do not cutthe thread using the t
eeth.
6. Use the pin cushion for pins and needles.
7. Keep the sewing room neat and clean before and a
fter sewing.

Steps in Sewing Household Linens


Pillow Case
1. Fold the two inches allowance for the opening faci
ng the wrong side. Fold the raw edge by 1/4 inch and
stitch close to the edge.
2. Use French seam in stitching the sides.
3. Stitch the three sides of the cloth with the right sid
e out by 1/8 inch away from the edge of the cloth.
4. Invert the pillow case with the wrong side out.
5. Stitch the three edges again by 1/4 inch away fro
m the edge.

Directions: Arrange the following steps in sewing hou
dehold linens ( Pillow Case )
Write the numbers 1,2,3,4,5 on the space provided.
-------- Invert the pillow case with the wrong side out.
--------Fold the 2 inches allowance for the opening
facing the wrong side. Fold the raw edge by 1/4
inch and stitch close to the edge.
--------Use seam in stitching the sides.
--------Stitch the three edges again by 1/4 inch away fr
om the edge.
--------Stitch the three sides of the cloth with the right
side out by 1/8 inch away from the edge of the cloth.
