What is early teenage
pregnancy?
Teenage pregnancy, also known as adolescent
pregnancy, is pregnancy in a female under the age
of 20. Pregnancy can occur with sexual intercourse
after the start of ovulation, which can be before the
first menstrual period (menarche) but usually occurs
after the onset of periods.

In the U.S., teen birth rates and number of births to

teen mothers have dropped steadily since 1990. In
2018, just under 180,000 infants were born to teens
15 to 19 years old. Teen birth rates have fallen by
70% in the past 3 decades.
That trend is driven both by the fact
that fewer teenagers are having sex
and that more of them use birth
control when they do.
Even so, a much higher share of
American teens get pregnant than
girls in other developed countries.
And the pace of the decline in teen
pregnancy in the U.S. differs by
race. Non-Hispanic Black girls and
Native American girls have seen
much slower drops in teen
pregnancy compared to Asian
American girls.
Causes of
Teenage
Pregnancy
The study found that most of the teenagers fell
pregnant at the age of 16 and 19 years.
The main reason of teenage pregnancy is the lack of
parental guidance. Nowadays, teens do what they
see in social medias and other medias that they think
is cool. Another reason is the lack of sex education.
Causes of Teenage
Pregnancy

•Lack of information about sexual and reproductive

health and rights.
•Drugs and alcohol
•Poverty
•peer pressure and sexual abuse
•Media influence
Effects of Teenage Pregnancy
Teenage pregnancy has many effects, not only on the
pregnant teenager but also on parents and other teens.

First is their future, because this event will affect their

education, because they are no longer in focus to graduate
and their focus is on their children.
There are some young people who graduate from school
even if they get pregnant early because they are still thinking
about their future as well as their child. But we know that
more young people are lost because of this.
Others neglect their children because they do not know how
to be a parent, so they just rely on their parents.
Effects of Teenage Pregnancy
Does early pregnancy have an effect on other young
people? Of course yes.
There are some young people who imitate the activities of
other young people around them, there are others who
think that they can get pregnant early because they see
that many young people get pregnant.

The biggest effect of early pregnancy is its effect on the

child and the mother's body. Why is it so bad? Because
pregnancy is only suitable for women who can bear a child,
in this case, young women are not yet able to carry a baby
because their body is not yet capable of it. It is also bad for
the child, why? because it is possible that the child born
may be premature, mentally deficient and lacking in body
parts.
Consequences of Early Teenage Pregnancy

Early motherhood is one of the timely problems we currently face. Many

young people get pregnant even at a very young age (15 years old). The
following are the possible consequences of early pregnancy in young
women.
• causing ill health
• detrimental to learning
• it also affects their future
• impacts on health
• future poverty
Who is most at risk on early
pregnancy problem?

Some experts suspect that teens today are delaying or

reducing their sexual activity. Other believe that teens
are becoming more educated about birth control
methods and being more proactive about preventing
pregnancy. That said teen pregnancy does still happen
because although most parents would never have
unprotected sex, teen pregnancy can happen in any
family. However, there are certain risk factors that make
some teens more likely to become pregnant. As a
parent, educating about risk factors can help support
your teen and mitigate the risk.
Percentage of Early Pregnancy in the
Philippines

Approximately 80% from the population ages 15-19 have been

recorded getting involved in teenage pregnancy. The Philippines has
recorded a 7% increase in births in 2019 up from the figure in teenage
pregnancies in 2015, the Commission on Population and Development.
According to the latest survey, this is the ninth consecutive year that the
country has reported arise in teenage pregnancies.
Impact of Teenage
Pregnancy in schools
According to some research, it revealed that teenage pregnancy causes
tension in the girls' families; the physical changes and experience of
pregnancy impacts on their school life; pregnancy causes emotional
instability in the teenage girls' lives and their education is indeed
disadvantaged.

Children are sexualised human beings, and it is important
for them to understand the sexual nature of their bodies.
Sexuality education plays a very significant role in the

and/or AIDS, sexually transmitted infections. It is

sexuality education as part of the development process of
Pregnancy the child. Professor Kader Asmal suggested that the earlier
the school begins to teach children about sexuality, the
better because they can be easily misled by their peers if
proper guidance regarding their sexuality is not given.
The Department of Education2 developed the sexual
education programme for implementation by the
Department of Basic Education in 2001. Policy guidelines
were established, and teachers were provided with
Awareness workshops to prepare them to teach sexuality education
programmes effectively. The examinable learning
programme called Life Orientation, in which sexuality
about Teenage education forms part of the subject, was introduced to be
taught in secondary schools in 2002.
Pregnancy The aims and objectives of sexuality education prescribed
by the Department of Education1 in the guidelines for
teachers are,

not doing enough or skirting their responsibilities have been
made.
Teenage pregnancies have doubled in the past years,
despite a decade of spending on sexuality education. Van

adolescent sexuality and TP in the past 30 years, many
about Teenage

Research Council in 2002 and 2008 both emphasised that
