What is Kurzweil 3000?
● Kurzweil 3000 is a software that reads online prints, is it for those who may
suffer from reading difficulties. It includes activities like typing target
words and completing a cloze passage.
● When created it was a text-to-speech program for those with visual
impairments.
Use of Kurzweil 3000 in a Special Ed Classroom

Kurzweil 3000 has many uses inside a special ed classroom such as:
● Providing help to students who have difficulties reading and students with dyslexia
● Reads out loud to students with a digital voice for clear understanding
● Questions can be embedded by teachers in the software, then students choose how to
answer whether it be through a microphone or in multiple choice so it is adjusted to
their needs
● Also gives students help to improve writing and thinking skills
PROS
● It gives students the opportunity to read out to the computer before engaging with the
software
● Multiple interactions in the software keeps students focused and motivated to learn
● Allows feedback so students can see what they need help on and therefore improve
on
● Teachers have said that the software had students acquire words faster than they have
all school year
CONS

● Because there are so many activities within the software it does

make it difficult to observe which activity worked best for
students and which one did not.
● The software does cost money and for a classroom of 30
students the price can end up being around $3,000 that just
being the yearly subscription
