WHY CHOOSE FAMILY HOME
PROVIDERS?
Financially feasible:
 Typically cost less than typical child care.
 May have a closer proximity to home and work for parents.
 Average cost of child care in MS is $4,863 year. (Boston Globe, 2014)
 Median household income in MS is $39,738. (Kids Count, 2014)

Less intimidating environment:

 Family home provider may be close family friend or relative.
 Child may be more familiar with other children receiving services.
PROBLEM
In some states, particularly MS, there is no mandatory registry
system for family child care providers.
 Children are less likely to be receiving quality child care.

Family home provider may not be adequately educated on

developmental needs of the children.
MS exceeds federal poverty guidelines compared to the national
average.
 Low-income families are more likely to choose family home care.
MS DEMOGRAPHICS
Population of children under 5 in MS: 201,453. (Kids Count, 2014)

32% of children under 5 in MS are living in poverty. (Kids Count, 2014)
