MEANING OF UNEMPLOYMENT
 Unemployment is a
situation in which a
persons are willing to
do work at the existing
rate of wages, but they
have find no job.
 It is often as measure of

the health of the


economy.
Definition of unemployment
 According to Pigou,” A
man is unemployed
only when he is both
without a job or not
employed and also
desires to be
employed.”
Types of unemployment
 Frictional unemployment
 Structural unemployment
 Seasonal unemployment
 Cyclical unemployment
Frictional unemployment
 This is a situation when
people are unemployed
for short span of time
while searching new
job or switching
between the jobs.
 In this the worker
himself quit their job in
search of better job
opportunities.
Structural unemployment

 This unemployment
arises when there is a
mismatch between the
worker’s skills and
availability of jobs in the
market.
Seasonal unemployment
 It occurs when
industries slow down
or shut down for a
season or make
seasonal shifts in their
production schedule.
Cyclical unemployment
 It is occurs when workers lose their jobs
because of down turns in business cycle.
 When the economy re-enter the expansion

phase of the business cycle, the unemployed


will get rehired.
