WHY DID SHE CHOOSE POTOMAC WATERS?

Big organization

Recession period
ISSUES FACED BY
HER
Communication barrier
Menial work
Favoritism
Power influence
Ego clash
Lack of performance recognition
Lack of co-operation
What could she have done differently ?
As Martha Rinaldi chose to join Potomac Waters to start her professional career, having thought that the
exposure and learning a big organisation would provide her would outweigh the learning’s she would
gather at Deep Dive Pizza.

According to us, we feel that the following actions could have been done differently by Martha

• Martha felt that her manager, Natalie Follet was not giving her enough attention. And anytime she
would reach out to her, she would always get the same reply that her manager was pre-occupied and
suggested t=her to finish off the readings. – The proper course of action in this situation would have
been to go over all the documents and reading and provide a weekly or fortnightly update to Follet

• What could have been different – In many traditional offices, there are certain ways in which managers
expect their juniors to behave. Martha having worked in Deep Dive Pizza might not have experienced
this, but working in a traditional set up office, things like this can make a big difference.
The second approach which she could have taken differently was her rapport with Jamie Vaughan.

Following the orders from Natalie, Martha depended for a lot of directions on Jamie.
Jamie was not allowing her to flourish, by keeping her involved in menial tasks
There was a big clash between both, when working on a product launch.

Different Approach – She could have tried to set the right kind of expectations in terms of the work she was interested
to perform. Apart from this if anything troubled her, she should have been upfront about it and not let people walk over
her. And lastly, she could have tried better to build a professional working rapport with Jamie.

Result – since Jamie was her immediate lead, or supervisor, Having a good professional relationship with him could
have helped her in her work.
Lastly, Martha could have help her composure and not let externalities affect her. As apart from her
immediate senior and manager, everybody had a very good opinion about Martha, She could have
leveraged that to assist in projects elsewhere.

Different – During some later meeting with Bautista, along with the other fresh MBA hires, Bautista
pointed out that her initial contribution was top-notch, but latterly she has been very quite. She
should have continued to put the effort and not let externalities affect her energies.

Result – if she had continued to put efforts, sooner or later her troubles would have been recognised
and she would have been put in a department or verticals of her choice due to her dedication. But
staying quite represented that you are giving up and not fighting back.
What should Martha Rinaldi do for her
career advancement?
