The document proposes using a flywheel energy storage system to address several problems: 1) the unpredictability of solar energy, 2) unbalanced grid loads during non-peak hours, 3) burden on the grid from fast electric vehicle charging, and 4) interruptions to critical loads during power outages. The flywheel system would use kinetic energy stored in spinning masses to smooth grid loads from solar and charge electric vehicles without overburdening the grid. During outages, flywheels could provide backup power to critical infrastructure. Existing examples of utility-scale flywheel energy storage are mentioned.

dynamics Trikaleshwar.S Problem Statement 1. Unable to rely Solar energy due to it’s unpredictable sunlight availability . 2. Unbalanced load on the grid in the night time or non peak hours. 3. Burden on grid because of fast charging by E-vehicles. 4. Supply to critical loads during power outage. 5. Expensive power storage system. $ The Proposed Solution in One Line • All the listed problem statement can be tackled by one simple WHEEL. Though wheel was invented to move objects from place to place this wheel has the same potential but in numerous ways spinning at the same place!! A multi input and multi output system designed with flywheel. How they are actually a “PrObLeM”-1
• Un-Predictable sunlight on solar panels during day time
None can know ,not even a super computer say how the weather of the is going to be a cloudy day or a sunny day or it’s going to rain. Which makes solar energy highly un- reliable. How they are actually a “PrObLeM”-2 • Unbalanced load on grid During the night time or the non peak hours of the day there is a huge imbalance created on the grid with large amount of power being available How they are actually a “PrObLeM”-3 • Burden on grid because of fast charging E-Vehicle’s When a E-v is plugged into a fast charging hub it easily draws around 40-50kW of power since they require high voltage (440-700v) which is a obvious heavy load for the grid management. How they are actually a “PrObLeM”-4 • Interruption to critical load during outage. Since power outages are common in most countries and are because of numerous reasons maybe a wire breakdown ,a blown transformer or even a maintenance work .During this time power supply to critical loads would be badly affected eg:- a ICU medical equipment ,a database server etc. What should’ve been done ? • Solar panels:- should be more consistent and higher efficiency. • Unbalanced load:- the production during night must be flattened. • Fast charging :- fast charge without affecting the grid balance. • Supply to critical load:- must never have interruptions in power supply. • Cost :-must be viable in all ways. What exactly does this “FLYWHEEL” DO? It’s just basically a heavy/light symmetrical body spinning at a defined speed . This rotating body possesses huge momentum as inertia .This rotational kinetic energy can be harnessed in many ways very efficiently . How Flywheel can do it right!? • Since it can be rotated using a induction motor this can be powered by a solar farm. • At night when there is available of un-used power the flywheel can be charged and can flatten the load –consumption graph. And pump back power during peak demand. To achieve a state called “Peak- shaving”. • This absorbed power during the night can be used for commercial purpose like fast charging which never puts any stress on grid as the necessary “huge” power requirement is provided by the fly wheel. • When there would be a power outage flywheels can store power for very long time thus can be a reliable source for critical loads. • This concept of FESS [Flywheel Energy Storage System] can be
a huge Government undertaking or even a industry with extraordinary power needs. • Since the FESS is highly manipulative after intense designing it can be used for individual houses. • Places in western countries like the U.S.A and the U.K have already have this running for the power distribution companies. Where are they using right now • Beacon Power opened a 5 MWh (20 MW over 15 mins) flywheel energy storage plant in Stephentown, New York in 2011 using 200 flywheels and a similar 20 MW system at Hazle Township, Pennsylvania in 2014. • A 2 MW (for 15 min)flywheel storage facility in Minto, Ontario, Canada opened in 2014.The flywheel system (developed by NRStor) uses 10 spinning steel flywheels on magnetic bearings. • https://beaconpower.com/carbon-fiber-flywheels/ Thank You
