 For children and young people, mental health and well-being is linked to parents and caregivers who are intimately
involved in shaping their lives.
 The WORLD OF THE CHILD in child protection system is the world of caregivers and functionaries. Every child needs
adequate nutrition, safe homes, and engaged caregivers
 To provide the best start in life, it is essential to care for the caregivers who care for children.
 Child protection and Alternative Care work is not easy – it is full of challenges and burnouts but professional such as
CWC, DCPOs, childline members and CCI staff must know and have the skills and strategies for coping with such
challenges and stress that arise in daily life. They must be aware and trained to find support and services if needed.
 Caregivers must have the resources they need to fortify their mental health. Equipped with right tools, they can then
provide nurturing care and construct a solid foundation for children’s mental health
 Stress and trauma present mental health risks whenever they occur. However, when they occur early in life, stress
and trauma can activate responses with biological and mental health consequences that can last a lifetime.
 For children living in Alternative Care , nurturing care from caregivers really matters. So, too, do safe and engaging
learning environments, where children can develop soft skills and resilience. And, as children enter their adolescent
years, peer relationships can shape lifelong norms and attitudes
 During covid, school closures have put a great deal of extra pressure on caregivers, in turn affecting their mental
health and well-being.
 When we support CP functionaries and caregivers, we support children and young people. If we want a child to
function well, we must tend to the person who’s tending to the child
 Increasingly, programmes have begun focusing on providing caregivers the support they need to care for children
and adolescent
.
