ENERGY EFFICIENCY & ECBC

7th February, 2020

Parade Ground, Sector 17, Chandigarh

CLIMATE CHANGE
GLOBAL
WARMING
Impacts of
Global Warming
are already here….
ILL EFFECTS
The Rising Sea Levels…

Coastal flooding…
The Melting Glaciers
Unprecedented Snow-Fall
Excessive Rainfall & Floods
INTENSE HEAT WAVES
Emission of CO2-Major cause of
Global Warming

In 1958, the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere was measured

at 316ppm, as of May 2016 it was 407ppm
In just 130 years, CO2 concentration has increased by 45%
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
• GLOBAL WARMING
 Changes in the climate are the principle cause of change in global
temperature
 1°C increase of average global temp. from 1880-1980
 Concentration of CO² is increasing @ 4.5% per decade

• POWER SCENARIO
 The country’s power generation capacity has increased up to 368 GW.
 But the country is still passing through unprecedented power shortage of
0.7% in average and 2% in peak demand.
 India needs to add 10,000-15,000 MW of capacity addition each year to
meet the power demand.
 More than 60% of energy is being produced from coal & petroleum which is
adding maximum pollution.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
ENERGY GENERATION AND SUPPLY
 Change in Dependence on non-renewable sources for generation
 Use of renewable energy sources: solar wind hydro and bio-energy
 Efficient machines for power generation
 Efficient system of transmission and distribution

EFFICIENT USE OF ENERGY AND ITS CONSERVATION

Strategy development to make power available
Augmentation gap between demand and supply
One unit of energy saved = one and half unit of capacity addition.
Energy Conservation Act-2001
Energy Conservation Building Code
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN BUILDINGS

Energy conservation potential exists to the tune of
40-50% in new buildings and 15-20% in existing
buildings
Adoption of energy efficient design for upcoming
new buildings
Sustainable development – a crucial challenge of the
architect and designer
Low energy consuming and environment friendly
building – considered as sustainable
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE
• It seeks to minimize the negative environment impact of
buildings by efficiency and moderation in the use of materials,
energy and development space.

• Sustainable Architect uses a conscious approach to energy and

ecological conservation in the design of the build environment.

• Green building is the practice of increasing the efficiency of

buildings and their use of energy, water, materials and reducing
buildings impacts on human health and the environment

through better sitting, design, construction, operation, maintenance

and removal taking into account every aspect of the complete
building life cycle.
